Artistic Text with Corel Draw

From: Lydia,

Hello Steve, how are you, I want to ask you, how do i get a word welded with the other one on top like you did in the motorcycle pattern. You should do another video showing that.

Thanks

Thank you Lydia. Here is a short video explaining how the motorcycle pattern was created. I only show the steps for creating the artistic text. I hope this helps those of you working with Corel Draw. I am getting more email every day asking for more tutorials. This is why I started this blog. I wanted scrollers to see that creating patterns was not that difficult.

Train Clock

This Train Clock would look great in a child's room. I used 3/4" thick walnut to give the train some depth. The base is a contrasting maple. The clock is about 10" long.

The insert is a 1 7/16" mini insert. Use a 1 3/8" forstner bit to cut the hole for the insert. Just cut the hole deep enough for the clock to fit flush.

I have a couple days off work this Thursday and Friday. I hope to spend several hours in the workshop and I'm looking forward to every minute. We are coming to the time of year here in the US when woodworkers start spending more time in their shops. It is also a good time to think about shop safety. The next time you go into your shop take a few minutes to think about what you can do to make your shop safer. This is a great hobby but it can be dangerous. Don't let a careless moment turn into a lifetime of regret. Be safe.

More Funny Word Art Patterns

This pattern book contains eight funny word art patterns. These make cool novelty gifts. I generally cut these from inexpensive clear pine. I cut the words and the base from 1/2" wood but 3/4" works fine also.

If you think of any funny short sayings, send them my way and I'll make patterns from them.

Have fun making some saw dust.

The Bezier tool in Corel Draw

I had a request from Jesse Williams in the Shout message box for a tutorial on the bezier tool in Corel Draw. To be honest I don't use the bezier tool often but I do know how to use it. I put together a short video that will show you the basics.

This tool can be used in many of the same ways that you have seen me use the pen tool. I find the pen tool much easier to use. You can use it to outline images to create scroll saw patterns. It can also be used to freehand patterns with enough practice.

Thanks Jesse for the request. If anyone has questions please feel free to email me or just put a message in the Shout box at the top of the blog.

Good luck learning to design scroll saw patterns with Corel Draw. It is a great application. The learning curve is not as bad as you might think. I am completely self taught from tutorials off the web and if I can learn it you can also.

If you are new here at the Scrollsaw Workshop look in the archive for other videos on Corel Draw.

The Road Rules

Bikes seem to be more popular today than ever. Make this project for the biker in your life. I cut this pattern from 1/2" oak but I think it might look better if the base was a contrasting hardwood.

This was a request from a reader. I thought it might be a pattern that several people would be interested in. I get several request for patterns. If I don't get around to the pattern you requested, I'm sorry. Sometimes I just can't come up with something that I like. I keep all the request logged and go back to them from time to time.

Email From Mary

From: Mary

Dear Steve,

Since your last email requested that we send in our projects, I thought I'd send in my favorite. I got the basic pattern from a scroll saw pattern book but made a few changes. The original pattern had a mom, three kids and a dog. Since I am the mother of five children (with no dog), I had to delete the dog and add two kids and a husband.

Love your website!

Mary.......

Thanks Mary, I like the way you framed this piece. You also did a great job customizing the pattern.

Golf Ball Display

Here is a pattern that you can cut for the golfer in your life. Make this project and display that hole in one ball or just the golfers collector golf ball.

Use 1/2" wood for the project. Drill a hole in the base that you can insert the tee. Glue the tee in the hole.

Most of the patterns I post here are easy to moderate patterns to cut. That seems to be what most of the readers here want. It's also what I usually cut. I am working on a more difficult pattern that I hope to have finished shortly. If you are looking for more of a challenge I should have it for you soon.

Sorry I have not posted much the last few days. Sometimes the pattern ideas come easy and sometimes I just look at Corel Draw and nothing worth while happens. It's interesting how making the patterns is easy but the ideas can be very difficult.

Dave's Marble Machine

I found this video on YouTube. I like it so much that I wanted to share it with you guys. I think I'll have to invest some time working on some projects like this.

Simple Segmented Pattern

Here is a free segmented scroll saw pattern. The box is 6" x 4". The segmented horse is very simple to cut. I stacked two pieces of contrasting wood and cut the pattern. I then used the dark body with the lighter main and tail. Stack cutting ensures that the pieces will fit perfectly. This also gives you two complete horses. You can save one for another project.

I glued up two 1 inch pieces of walnut for the box body. This is the thickness capacity of my Dewalt saw. I used a #7 blade to cut out the body. When you are cutting a piece this thick use the largest blade you have and take your time. You will need to spend some time sanding this box to get everything flush. A bench top belt sander will help speed things up.

I hope you enjoy this project. I also wanted to welcome all the new subscribers. The small write up in this quarters Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts magazine seems to be bringing me quite a few new subscribers. Thank you SSWC.

20 Small Clocks Patterns

Here is a free scroll saw pattern book with 20 small clocks. These clocks are 4" tall and 2 1/2" wide. You want to use a nice contrasting wood so the pattern will show up well.

These clocks use a 1 7/16" mini insert. You could also use the 1 7/16" picture frame insert as well. Use a 1 3/8" forstner bit to cut the hole for the insert.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and spending time in the workshop. The weather here in Kentucky is spectacular. 70 degrees and clear. Not to mention my Kentucky Wildcat football team is giving the #1 LSU team all they want. If we win this game my heart might not be able to take it. I get a little excited.

Halloween Word Art Pattern

Happy Halloween, the night of ghosts, ghouls, black cats and bats. Here is a pattern to decorate your haunted house. This scroll saw word art pattern is about 10" long. I cut it from 1/2" mdf and painted it black. You could add a little painted blood to the top of the letters for added effect.

We are entering the holiday season. Make use of your scroll saw to make gifts for all you family and friends. You should be able to find a pattern on this blog to suit most of you gift giving needs. Just think, no parking at the mall, no waiting in line and a good excuse to be in the workshop!

Baby's 1st Christmas Box Pattern

I had a request for a baby's 1st Christmas Pattern. This box is large enough to hold a babies 1st shoes or other keep sake.

The box is 6" x 4" x 2 1/4". This means your saw must have a cut capacity of 2". Use the largest blade you have to cut the walls and slow your saw down a little.

This pattern can be easily modified for other uses. I'll try to make some other top designs as I get time.

Holiday Word Art Patterns

The holidays are almost here. I thought I would post a few holiday word art patterns. I like to cut these from 1/2" or 3/4" pine or MDF and paint them. The one pictured is 1/2" MDF painted with metallic gold spray paint.

Scroll Saw Tooth Brush Holder

This project is made from 1/4" Maple. It stands about 6" tall. I had a request to do a set of projects that could be used to decorate a bathroom. I'm working on a couple more to go with this one.

You need to give this project a good coat of lacquer to protect it from water damage.

Buying a Scroll Saw?

If you are looking to buy your first scroll saw or upgrade an existing saw, here are a few tips. I get email almost every week from new scroll sawyers asking about getting starting in the hobby. I thought I would put together a video series to answer some of these basic questions.

Email from Vienna Austria

I received this email from Fritz this morning and wanted to share it with the rest of you. Fritz used one of my patterns to come up with something original that I think looks great. Thanks Fritz.

From: Fritz

Hi Steve,

I am a newcomer to scroll sawing and I love your website videos, comments and free download patterns. I successfully finished your wooden paper knife, your candle holder and most recently your box with flower motives. On the latter, I actually dared to improve on your pattern by replacing the cut-out bit with an inlay version. I followed the tutorial in a book for scroll saw beginners: Cherry on top of walnut, saw table at an angle of 2 degrees (several angles tried on scrap of same thickness as project wood), very, very small holes, the smallest blade I had (No. 2-0) and counter-clockwise cuts. The result is not perfect, but not bad for a first time attempt. My wife loved the other items (mentioned above), but there were many more “ahhhs” and “ohhhhs” on this one. I also did your 3D leaves, but I found them too heavy to go on this delicate piece, so I am saving them for another project.

Thank you very much for your invaluable contribution towards my new hobby!

Fritz

October is Clergy Appreciation Month

October is clergy appreciation month. I had a couple requests for a pattern that could be given as gifts to their pastors and pastors family. I hope this portrait of Jesus will satisfy those requests.

The portrait is 5x7 and should be cut from 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. There are some intricate cuts in the portrait. If you are comfortable with a spiral cut blade use one. If like me you don't like spiral blades then use a #2.

The frame can be cut from any contrasting hardwood you have handy. If you don't have the tools to cut a 1/4" dado for the portrait to sit in then use 1/4" material for the frame and simply glue the frame over the portrait.

If you don't have a way to cut miters in the frame you could glue up a panel and apply the frame patterns on the panel and cut it as one piece. There is always a way to get around a lack of tools. Just figure out a way to do with what you have.

Another option if you don't like the frame pattern or just don't want to cut it out then just buy a frame that holds 5x7 art work and you are good to go.

As you can tell from the simulated picture of the pattern, I have not cut this project yet. I'll probably test it out this weekend. If you wany to give it a try before I test it please send me an email and let me know if all went well.

Round Initial Box

Everyone loves personalized gifts. This pattern book has a round box with a pattern for each letter. This pattern is easy to cut. If you don't have a spindle or belt sander be prepared for a lot of hand sanding. The box is 3 inches wide.

This has been a rough week for me at work so I have not had much time in the work shop. Right now it looks like I'll have the weekend free. I hope to spend much time designing patterns. If you have emailed me requesting something I'll try to work on it this weekend.

How are you doing. I just wanted to say that your site is awesome. I am new to using the scroll saw but i am finding it to be a lot of fun. I am a carpenter in the Air Force and every once in a while they want us to make going away gifts, awards and things of that nature. Here are some pictures of some projects I have done. Tell me what you think.

Hi Steve
I downloaded your name program last week and had a ball over the weekend, started making one for a bit of practice and ended making a few for the kids including one for my grandson, when his mother saw it today she put her order in for one.
Thanks again
Paul

Thanks Paul, happy to hear you had a good time making name plates.

Hey guys, I have not been able to update the blog the last few days. My day job is getting in the way of my play time. I'll get busy again in a day or two. Hope everyone is doing well and making lots of saw dust.
