I call it a wobble bowl.

I had several readers write and ask about the bowl in yesterdays picture post. There was enough interest that I sat down and designed my version of the bowl. There are two bowls in the pattern book. One is 5 1/2" and the other is 7".

I used 1/4" thick wood for the 5 1/2" bowl in the picture above. If you make the 7" bowl I suggest you use 3/8" thick wood. That would make the larger bowl stand a little over 2 1/2" tall. These are just suggestions. Experiment and see what pleases your eye.

One way to add a little contrast is to make two bowls from a light colored wood and a dark wood. Then mix and match the pieces when you put them together. You might as well stack cut the two bowls and get two for the price of one.

Reader Picture Post. Long But Worth It.

I am fortunate to be able to talk to scrollers from all over the world. You guys and gals send me tips, suggestions, comments, questions and lots of pictures. I have to say that I enjoy the pictures best of all. It's great to see what you have been working on. I can't post them all because there are just too many. This will be a long post but I wanted to include as many as I could so everyone could see the projects other scrollers are working on.

This is a beautiful cross that William Wilson made for his pastor. I am sure he loved it.

Small Doll Cradle Scroll Saw Pattern

This is a small cradle for a 6 inch doll. The construction is slot and tab and butt joints for easy build. The side rails are raised to prevent angle cuts. The pattern is designed for 1/2" thick wood. I built the demo from some off the shelf 1/2" poplar from Home Depot. This will keep you from having to mill your own 1/2" wood.

Give a gift card in a hand made wooden wallet.

I always feel a little bad giving gift cards as presents. It just seems impersonal. The funny thing is I always love receiving them. Here is a project that makes the impersonal gift card a hand made one of a kind gift.

These little gift card wallets can be cut in minutes from 1/8" thick Baltic birch ply or hardwood. The gift card slides in and then the ribbon is tied through a hole to hold the gift card in place. It's difficult to see from the pictures above but there are three pieces sandwiched to make a pocket. The front and back can be stack cut to speed things up and for a better fit.

After you finish cutting the pattern glue the pocket together and sand all the sides flush and smooth. Drill the 1/8" hole for the ribbon and your wallet is complete.

If you have a craft show between now and Christmas I bet this would be a good seller. Stack cut to increase productivity and maximize profit. This would also be an easy project to customize with your own silhouette. I included a blank so you could customize with initials or what ever you like.

Here are a few more ornaments to cut. These are picture ornaments. They are designed for the 50mm picture frames but you could modify for the small frames if needed. The Woodcraft order number for the frame is in the pattern book. Another thought if you don't want to use the frame is to leave the hole for the frame solid and use a silver pen to customize the ornament with a name and date.

Reader Submitted Pattern - By Bill Wilson

Bill Wilson was kind enough to send me this circle puzzle pattern he made to share with you guys. The pattern is hand drawn but I think it is clear enough to cut easily.

You could use this as a template to cut out a picture puzzle or just cut a plain wood puzzle.

Small Fretwork Basket Scroll Saw Pattern

This small fretwork basket is 7 1/2" long and 5" deep. It is designed with slot and tab construction for easy assembly. I used 1/4" poplar but you could use 1/4" Baltic Birch ply with good results also. Because the opposing sides are identical you can save a lot of time by stack cutting.

This pattern would lend itself to enlarging. You could double the size and use 1/2" thick stock for a more substantial basket.

I need some help answering a few emails I have received lately. What brands and models of scroll saws are popular outside the United States? I have this question from South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. If you have a few minutes and could drop me an email I would be grateful and you might be able to help some new scrollers get started in the hobby.
