Doctor of Fishology Scroll Saw Pattern.

Doctor of Fishology plaque.

I know that in many places around the country you are still dealing with winter conditions but Spring is not that far off.  Before long the fishermen will be getting their boats ready for another season on the lakes.

60 million people fish in the US according to a 2006 survey. This has a 125 billion dollar impact on the American economy helping to provide over a million job.

I just noticed that Feedburner has lost all the email subscribers. They are the ones who send out the daily newsletter to my email subscribers. They occasionally have issues like this but I have never seen the email subscriber list disappear. I have my fingers crossed that this gets out.

Laundry Room Sign

The last couple of weeks have been hectic around here. I have not been able to update the blog as often as I like. I am hoping things will get back to normal soon. Hang in there with me and I'll get things going again soon.

My wife and I are NASCAR fans. Patty's uncle was a driver back in the 50's and 60's so her family has followed the sport for years. As some of you have no doubt heard there was an horrific crash Saturday in Daytona. Several fans were hurt when debris from a car went into the stands. We hope for a speedy recovery to those hurt. The last report I heard everyone was in at least stable condition. This is good news considering how bad the situation looked as it happened.

Seven Inch Tall Flower Letters

This pattern book has all 26 capital letters seven inches tall. The letters each have a flower cut out. I have made these larger letter names for children's rooms a few times and the parents love them. If you are cutting out a boys name just leave out the flowers if you like that better.

I like to cut them out of 1/4" thick MDF. The MDF is easy to paint and cuts fast. Just make sure you wear your dust mask when cutting MDF. The dust from MDF is not very good to get in your lungs. The MDF can be purchased in any of your big box home improvement stores. You can buy the easy to handle 2' X 4' sheets. It's much cheaper than wood and you will usually be painting this project so why not use the cheaper material.

The edge of MDF is porous and does not accept paint very well. To help this I make a slurry of water and wood glue. I use a paint brush and paint the edges with the mixture. After it dries it accepts the paint much better.

It's often best to just leave them unfinished and let the parents paint the color they like.

One thing that is tricky is to hang the letters on the wall. You want them secure because the parents will usually hang them over the crib on the wall. Heavy duty double stick tape works pretty good if you buy the good stuff.

I Pedal Scroll Saw PAttern.

This easy pattern is for the folks who spend time on their bike.

Those of you waiting for custom patterns from my Custom Pattern Store I should be able to finish all orders this weekend.

Just a reminder for those of you who receive the email newsletter. The newsletter is just a copy of the daily blog post. If you miss or lose an email just visit the blog. If you need an earlier pattern I can't resend it. It is in the free online pattern catalog on the blog. Don't forget that we have an online community forum. There are many scrollers talking about our favorite hobby.

One feature I have not spent much time talking about is the online stencil printer. With this online program you can make key fobs and name desk sign patterns. The program is cross platform so you Mac users can use this instead of my Windows only desktop programs.

For our friends up north.

Let me start out by saying that I don't do many patterns of this type for countries other than the United States. Obviously being American I am proud of our armed forces and like to show that pride as often as possible. Today I made an exception because I received an email from a friend up north of the border. Paul reminded me that the Canadian armed forces shared our sacrifice in the Korean war. He ask if I would do this pattern and I am happy to do it.

The Canadians had the second most boots on the ground during the war. They sent 26,791 troops to fight in the conflict. 1,558 causalities including 516 who paid the ultimate price with their lives. There were a total of 17 countries who sent forces to Korea fighting under the United Nations Command. Don't hold me to all the stats I share. I look them up online and many sites give different answers. I won't have a chance to make patterns of all these countries but that in no way is meant as a slight. There are heroes all over the world.

Let me make another point that is sometimes difficult for me to wrap my head around. Because I write a blog that reaches most of the countries in the world I get to talk to a lot of people. Some of those people live in countries that many here would consider hostile to us. On average that's not true. 99% of all the people in every country just want to live in peace and raise their families. When we talk it's like talking to my next door neighbor. Wars are started by a very small number of people. Unfortunately a very large number of people pay the price.  Maybe with luck all the open communications helped by the internet is the beginning of more people understanding we are all friends.  There never needs to be another war. Of course there will be but we can dream can't we?

When I design a pattern for the military I'm not honoring the war. War is sick. I'm honoring the young men and women who leave their homes and families behind to do what their country calls them to do.

I do get a few emails asking that I not do these patterns. Of course I get a few emails asking that I not do religious, basketball, football, dog, cat, big, small etc....  I do what I do.

The Never Forgotten War.

- The war in Korea is known as the forgotten war. The vets and families of the 5,720,000 troops sent to aid South Korea will never forget the sacrifice and hardship they went through. There were 141,000 American casualties of the war including 36,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice and died during the conflict.

The war was a civil war between the north and the south. For the U.S. it was also the beginning of the cold war with the communist lead Soviet Union. As always politics played a significant part in the battle. Because of fears that the war would escalate into a wider conflict and maybe start WWIII the U.S. started a long series of cease fire talks with the north. The troops had to endure almost weekly speculation that the war would end soon only to be disappointed when talks stalled.

Over 8,000 American troops are still listed as missing in action.

The median age of a Korean war vet is now around 79 years young.

131 Korean War participants received the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is Americas highest military honor, awarded for acts of personal valor above and beyond the call of duty. I would have given 5,720,000 Medals of Honor. They are all heroes to me.

African Americans played a significant and highly valued role during the Korean war. In October 1951, the all-black 24th Infantry Regiment, a unit established in 1869, which had served during the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II and the beginning of the Korean War, was disbanded, essentially ending segregation in the U.S. Army. In the last two years of the Korean War throughout the services, hundreds of blacks held command positions, were posted to elite units such as combat aviation and served in a variety of technical military specialties. They fought for their country even in a time when their fellow Americans back home did not always give them the respect for the brave and patriotic heroes they were. Real heroes do what they do because it's right. I have always believed that the African American soldiers in the Korean war had a significant impact on civil rights movement in America. Their patriotism, bravery and courage could no longer be over looked by reasonable people.

There were 7,140 POW’s during the Korean War.  Of these, 4,418 returned to the United States, 2,701 died.

Nearly half of the Korean vets had a least some college education. That's 13% higher than the average person in the same age bracket.

There are estimated to be around 2.5 million Korean war vets still living.

This is just my personal experience but I have noticed something in the Korean war vets I have met. They have been very humble and soft spoken about what they did in Korea. I have always wondered why. I asked a vet this question one time and this is what he told me. He said there was never any closure for him because the cease fire ended combat but in his mind there was no victory.

There is no doubt that wars are about victory and defeat. That's how history judges war. War is also about people. There are millions of people living in a free and open society in South Korea. They are in that situation largely because of the sacrifice of U.S. soldiers. I wonder how many Korean war vets feel they never got closure when they came home?

This pattern is a tribute to all the men and women who served in the Korean war. If you have followed my blog for long you know that I am passionate about the respect that our men and women of the armed services deserve. These are my favorite patterns to design.
