Hanging Black Cat Scroll Saw Pattern.

How long can he hang on? Hang this little black cat on your refrigerator or on a shelf.  I used 1/4" thick MDF and painted it black. The dowel rods are 3.5 inches long.

Is it too early. Not for crafters.

It's August but it's not too early to get ready for the Holiday craft shows or just making presents. I will slowly start releasing holiday patterns. This Christmas plate was cut from a wooden craft plate you can buy at better craft stores. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby. You can order it online at this LINK to wooden plate at Hobby Lobby.

When I started this design I thought it was big enough for the plate but as you can see I made it too small. In the pattern pdf there are four sizes for you to choose from. These wooden 12" plates are consistent in outside diameter but the inner cutout varies from plate to plate. That's another reason I made it four different sizes.

The plates are only $7.99. If you enjoy this design and don't mind buying the plates let me know and I'll design some more designs like this one. They can come a little rough and might need some finish sanding to get them ready to scroll.

These could also be customized with a family name to make great gifts. Just a thought so let me know what you think and maybe I can do that also for a small fee.

I also have an idea that might work to make our own plates. It's easy with a lathe but maybe we can build them with our scroll saws and a router. I'll work on it as I get some time.

Busy with a toy box build.

Sorry for not posting the last couple days. I've been busy doing my uncle duties. Anytime one of the children in our family turn one I build them a toy box. Beth and Bryan's second child, Brylee has her first birthday party tomorrow.

I wanted to do a photo build like I did with the last toy box but I waited until the last minute to start this build. I built this box the last three nights after work. It's 4am Saturday morning and I just put the last touches on.  I used the color scheme from her bedroom. The ornamentation is pretty basic but I think it's enough. Especially since it's 4am. Did I tell you I'm tired.

One note about working tired. I used a piano hinge for the lid. It needed to be cut to length so I took it to my chop saw. I had my glasses on but didn't think about protecting the rest of my face. When the blade hit the metal hinge small bits of metal went flying. They hit my forehead and cheeks. No damage but it scared the you know what out of me. I was just tired and in a hurry. That's a very bad combination when working in the shop.

I know I promised to put up a pattern for the last toy box I built but it never got done. When I build this type of project I don't work from plans. I design on the fly. That makes it tough to go back and draw up the design. Sorry but I probably won't do it this time either.

A tribute to a readers dad.Charles Satterfield.

I was having an email conversation with Ginger Scally when she mentioned a saying her dad always said.  Her father passed away a couple years ago but his skills as a master carpenter were passed along to the three children. Ginger says she and her little sister can hold their own in the shop and their brother worked the trade for years with his dad. Ginger said "How many women do you know with a carpentry bench, scroll saw and drill press in her bedroom?  ;-)". I think she might be surprised by the answer to that question. Many of the finest scroll saw artists I know are women. I've seen scroll saws in the living room, bed room and kitchen. :) What's a little saw dust going to hurt?

When she mentioned the saying her dad use to say I thought it would make a fun scroll saw pattern. I probably did not do justice to the memory of Charles but if he is reading this from above I hope he has a smile on his face. Thanks Ginger for the quote and nice family story.

Parrot on a Perch Scroll Saw Pattern.

The graphic for this project came from www.vectorportal.com. It is distributed for personal or commercial use. I modified it into a scroll saw pattern. He stands just under ten inches tall.

We had some sad news for the hobby of scrolling this week. Creative Woodworking and Crafts magazine has stopped publication. I never had the opportunity to work with them but others who have always praised the publication. Sheila Landry of www.sheilalandrydesigns.com did an informative blog post about her feeling of the closing. The Jazz Player Scroll Saw Pattern.

I want to talk about a couple things that have come up lately about the blog. The email subscription newsletter has had a few problems lately. A small percentage of the newsletters are not being received. Let me explain how the email newsletter works. My blog is hosted by Google. It uses a service called Google Blogger. One feature of Blogger is the ability to offer an email newsletter. Every day when I make a post on the blog, Google automatically turns that post into an email and sends it out to anyone who has signed up to receive them.

Unfortunately this does not give me as much control as I would like but it's free and the pay services can be very expensive for a blog with as many subscribers as I have. This blog has around 20,000 email subscribers. FeedBlitz is an alternative service thatr might be more reliable but for that many email subscribers we are talking $1,700 a year.

So to make a long story short I have to work with Feedburner to deliver the newsletter. If you are one of those who are not receiving the email the first thing to do is look in your spam folder. That is the most common issue. Most email clients allow you to right click anything in the folder and say it's not spam. That will fix that problem.

If that does not work then we can cancel the current subscription and start a new one. That has fixed almost every one so far. You can do it yourself if you still have one of the old email newsletters. Just scroll to the bottom and click unsubscribe. Then visit the blog and sign up again. I'm sorry for the headache but I'm kind of at Google's mercy here. Thanks for your patience with this problem.

The second issue I want to address is advertising. I know almost everyone hates web ads. The truth is that many websites would go away without ads.  Mine would be one that would slowly die without the little money I receive from ads.

There are two types of ads on my blog. On the blog there are Google served ads. I have little control of their content but they are usually targeted ads that are suppose to be of interest to the reader. It's not perfect but does work most of the time.

The second ads are the ones for the few products I sell. They include the Pattern archive DVDs, The Jigsaw puzzle templates and the new Wooden Vases on the scroll saw book.

The ads and the very kind donations I receive pay for the blogs upkeep with some left over for me to buy a few new tools from time to time. Trust me when I say not many people get rich blogging. It is a passion for most bloggers but without some return it would be tough to do it.

So far this year we have had 230 days. I have posted a blog 178 times. Most of those posts included a free pattern if not more. I have been doing this for over 7 years. One of those years I posted 367 times. That's more than one a day. I say this to make the point that I am a dedicated blogger

There was a recent post on a Facebook group that I want to post here also.
"Has anybody, besides myself, noticed that Steve Good's website is getting filled with more and more advertising? I noticed that his book, Wooden Vases on the scrollsaw, which I bought last week (or the week before) is advertised 5 times on today's Daily Post. I don't mind an occasional "plug" but this is getting to be more and more advertising and less "scrolling". Just a thought!"

His facts are mostly correct so I don't have a beef with that except for the comment that the blog is more and more about advertising and less about scrolling.  I never post a blog with only ads. Every time a post goes up there is either a free pattern or other scrolling content. I would venture to say that I give more free things of value away than any other site on the web.

I'm not pointing this out to blast what this person said because he was just expressing an opinion and he was not insulting or trying to harm me in any way. He actually did me a favor because it made me look at how I blog. It's easy to get complacent after so many years of doing this and it's helpful to step back every now and then and see if you can do things differently.

If you are not interested in the things I have for sale I completely understand. I have absolutely no problem with you just taking the free patterns. For the most part I do this for fun and it's fun when people download my free stuff. Please understand that I am going to sell a few things and those things will be advertised on the blog and in the email newsletter. I promise I won't try to sell you cheap car insurance or or a get skinny in 30 days plan. I will keep it a scroll saw related.

A beautiful box by Dan Waingrow.

A few weeks ago I published a simple segmentation pattern of a flag graphic. Dan Waingrow took the pattern and made something special from it. The annual Conejo Valley Woodworkers Association picnic was coming up and he needed something for the auction.

Dan used the piece as the lid for a nice hard wood box. He used walnut, maple and bloodwood for the segmented top. Notice the nice spline joints at the corners of the box. He painted the backer of the segmentation white to highlight the stars. Dan say the box was a big hit at the show and I can see why. He did a fantastic job taking an ordinary pattern and turning it into something very special. 

I wanted to share the pictures he sent me and encourage everyone to make changes to the patterns I post. If you see something that makes a pattern unique and personal then by all means make the change. Thanks for sharing the pictures Dan.
