Battery eliminator for AA battery clock movements.

Are you tired of replacing batteries in you DIY clocks? This little device is reasonably priced and does the job. Turn your AA battery powered clock in to a AC powered clock. I just received this in the mail and installed it in one of my clocks. I bought it from Norkro for $9.99 + $5.90 shipping and handling. I found the same product on Klockits website for a buck cheaper but there shipping was a buck higher. I am more familiar with Klockit so I probably would have ordered from them if I had seen it before I placed the other order. The order from Norkro.com was shipped timely without problems so all was good.

There is not much to review with this product. It replaces a single AA battery. Just replace the battery with the AC powered substitute and you are all set. The power cable is six feet long. The attached wall wart is not too to large at about 2.25 inches long.

If you sell your clocks at Arts and Crafts shows this is a nice up-sell for your customers. If you give your clocks as gifts this really add a nice touch.

They also have one to replace C batteries.

The picture below shows the battery eliminator attached to one of my clocks.

Basketball Fanatic Scroll Saw Pattern.

This pattern will hang well for the basketball fan in your life. The backboard is 10" X 8". It would be easy to customize this pattern for your favorite team. Just use a stencil font to add the team name to the backboard in place of the current text.

Just another note about email. I am days behind. Please forgive me for not answering your email if I miss yours.

BigFoot Products DCS Review. Dust control for the DeWalt DW788.

Let me start out by letting you know that this is not a paid review. The product was supplied to me for free for review purposes. I have no affiliation with BigFoot Products.

Dust control can be a big problem when scrolling. David from BigFoot Products ask me to check out his new DCS(Dust Control System). I went into the shop and put it through some tests. Check out the video below to find out how it did.

Fish Sculpture Scroll Saw Pattern.

-This project is all cut from 3/4" Thick material. The fish is over nine inches long. It's going to be a little fragile so you will have to sit the sculpture in a careful location.

I'm always watching Youtube for interesting scroll saw videos. I found one tonight that I think is a fantastic example of free hand folk art on the scroll saw. Christopher Demetrick designs and cuts a folksy looking fun project. It's not too long so give it a look.

Once again I have made a set of plaques - for Valentine's Day, observed on February 14 in many countries around the world. Valentines is all about love, hearts and roses, and all these symbols are featured in the patterns. Cut the designs using 1/2" to 1" (12mm to 25mm) for a substantial plaque project. Alternatively they can be cut from 1/8" (3mm) wood. Drill blade entry holes and make the inside cuts of the designs. Use small pieces of thin double-sided tape in a few places to attach the work piece on top of the wood for the backer. Cut the scalloped perimeter line of the pattern through both layers of wood. Detach the work pieces, remove the double-sided tape, and sand them by hand. For overlays made from birch plywood, add a darker wood (or painted backer), to accentuate the designs. Complete the project by gluing the overlay on top of the backer. Attach a saw tooth hanger to the back. Instead of using it as a wall hanging, the plaque can also be displayed on a stand.
I am offering this set at a 25% discount as seen below, (added to Special Offers) but they are also available as single patterns.

Not for the faint of heart.

The DeWalt DW788 scroll saw is one of the most popular saws ever produced. Most potential buyers of a mid level saw will consider the DW788. I probably get more email about this saw than any other machine on the market.
If you spend any time researching this model, especially on the internet you will see a wide range of comments. Both good and bad.

Originally the machine was manufactured in Canada. It had a very good reputation then which was well deserved. These were known as the type 1 machines. Eventually production was shipped over seas and the quality dropped. It took some time but eventually most of the quality issues were worked out. These were the type 2 machines. If you are interested you can check to see which type machine you have by looking at the label on the motor.

Today I can recommend the DW788 as a quality machine. That's not to say that they don't have problems. All machines can have trouble. For the current price of the DeWalt DW788 I don't think you will find a better saw. The one exceptions to this is the Delta 40-694. It is the Delta version of the DW788. They are nearly identical so I consider them both together. You can often find a better deal on the Delta so it's is something to consider.
The reason I wanted to talk about the DeWalt is because I received an email from Bob Brokaw of the Gwinnett Woodworker association today. He has a great deal of experience servicing the DW788. Bob has taken the time to put together a four part video series showing the dis-assembly and common repairs of the machine.

Let me say up front that these procedures will void the warranty of your machine if you try them your self. These should be preformed by a qualified service technician. With that out of the way I do think it's very useful to know and understand your machine. Even if you never attempt these procedures on your machine you will have a very high understanding of how the machine works. This can be useful even if you have a tech service the machine.

Thanks Bob for a wonder gift to the DeWalt scroll saw users.

It's about time that we make something simple.

This desk clock is very simple to make. I used 1/4" maple for the face. The back is 1/2" thick walnut. The feet are 3/4" walnut. The clock face is five inches square.

One tip when making the feet. Make sure the notches are a snug fit to the clock. Build the clock body then cut the notches to fit. The notches in the feet are at a slight angle so the clock leans back a few degrees.

I buy the clock movements that are 2 1/8" X 2 1/8" square and have a stem that fits 1/4" Thick face. These clock movements are cheap and you can come up with all kinds of projects using them.

Modern Mantle Clock Scroll Saw Pattern.

This mantle clock is 10.5 inches tall. I used maple for the clock face, cherry for the legs and walnut dowels for the clock leg stretchers and face pips. I used a 2 1/8" X 2 1/8" X 1/4" clock movement. The hand set is 4 7/8" long.

Cut the legs and join them with 1/4" diameter dowel stock. Then cut the face. Drill the pips so the 3/8" diameter dowel stock can be glued into the holes and sanded flush. Experiment with different drill bits to make sure you get a good sung fit. Not all dowel stock is sized exactly as labeled.

Pay attention to the details. Watch the grain of the wood on the clock face. It should run vertical. When you glue in the dowel for the four pips on the face make sure the grain runs with the clock face. Take the time to get the dowels sanded flush with the face and legs.  When you assemble the leg assembly make sure it stands without rocking on two of the legs. Both legs need to be exactly the same height.

The face is just glued to the front legs assemble. I did it that way to make sure you could get the face square. You want the face vertical. Notice how the wooden box around the clock movement sits on the legs.

This is you chance to practice cutting perfect circles. If the face is not round it will stand out badly. Your blade should never lose contact with the pattern line when cutting the circle. If you need to tip for cutting circles take a look at the video below.
