Cutting larger projects can be intimidating to new scrollers. Controlling the larger blank can be difficult until you get the feel for it. There are some advanced techniques that can help but one basic technique is to stand while are cutting larger pieces. If you are used to sitting on a stool or chair while you cut you will find that you run out of room when you turn the piece towards you body. Simply stand up and take a half step back from the saw.
Spiral blades can also be advantageous when cutting larger pieces but they do take practice to master. You will generally find you have a rougher cut until you master the spirals.
A more advances technique than can get you out of a pinch is to twist the blade. Normally the teeth of the blade are pointing toward you. This means that you can only cut to the length of the throat of your saw. Take pliers and twist the top and bottom of the blade so the teeth point about 45 degrees away from forward. Now when you push the blank into the teeth of the blade the back of the blank will clear the throat. It's an extreme technique but when you need the room it can come in handy.
