I occasionally get email from people who are new to my blog and the hobby. They can be confused when looking at the simulated pictures I produce on many of my patterns. Because I do so many patterns I can not cut them all. When I don't cut them I simulate the final product image.
Sometimes because you can't see the depth in the simulated picture the pattern won't be clear. If you ever have a questions about the project look at the pattern and not the final picture. On my patterns the grey is always the wood. The white areas are is cut away.
In a pattern like this one there are two pieces. The black part is cut from one piece of wood and the red part is a separate cut. The front cut out is then glued to the backer board. That may not be obvious from looking at the picture but the pattern will make it more clear.
I usually use a simulated drop shadow to give the picture as much depth as possible. I did not add the drop shadow on this one so it looks very flat.
Remember that no question is a dumb question when you are just getting started. When I do something that does not make sense feel free to question me. I don't get a chance to answer all the email I receive but I triage the ones from new scrolers and do my best to answer those first. My comments in this post came from a readers question.
