Santa Scroll Saw Pattern

A Christmas present in October.

I had an email from a reader the other day who uses a wheelchair. They ask about scroll saw stands that would accommodate the chair comfortably. I knew that Hawk made such a stand for their saws but I was not aware of a generic stand.

I did what I always do and asked Google. Right off the bat I found that The Art Factory sold exactly what we were looking for. Not only does the stand look great but it comes from one of the most trusted scroll saw sites on the web.

The price is a bit steep but if it gives you an opportunity to pursue your hobby without pain or discomfort it may be worth the price. This stand is also recommended for those who want to use a chair instead of a tall stool that is normal for most stands.

You can click the link to view the details but it says it works with the Excalibur, PS Wood, Hawk and DeWalt saws as well as many others. The image is linked to The Art Factory web site.

If you are looking to move up from an entry level saw this is a good buy. This Delta 40-690 is sold without the stand and light so the price is under $380. I normally recommend you buy the stand that comes with a scroll saw but if price is a barrier this does help.

  • Electronic variable speed can be adjusted from 400-1,750 SPM for a wide array of cutting applications
  • Dual parallel link arm design reduces vibration reducing over and under cutting improving accuracy and quality
  • Upper arm lifts and locks in the raised position during blade changes or while adjusting blade position for fret work
  • Tool-free blade clamp allows for quick, easy blade changes in seconds

In Memory of Arnold Palmer September 10, 1929 – September 25, 2016.

Arnold Palmer is generally considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. He was one of golf's most popular stars and its most important trailblazer. He was the first superstar of the sport's television age, which began in the 1950s.

In a career that spanned more than six decades, he won 62 PGA Tour titles from 1955 to 1973, placing him fifth on the Tour's all-time victory list. He collected seven major titles in a six-plus-year explosion, from the 1958 Masters to the 1964 Masters. He also won the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, and in 1974 was one of the 13 original inductees into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

I have come to respect the Rikon brand. I own the older version of this band saw and it is a dream to re-saw lumber. I have used it to it's maximum capacity on walnut, cherry and maple. I did replace the standard blade with a Timber Wolf blade and that made it even better at re-sawing. If you need a band saw for your shop I think you will enjoy this one. Just make sure you set it up correctly and install a good blade. You will be cutting thin stock for your scroll saw projects like a pro.

  • Quick-release blade tension
  • 2 speeds: 1445/2950 ft/min
  • Hinged blade guard with sight window
  • Large 16-by-21-1/2-inch work table
  • 4-inch dust port

Amazing Grace Cross Scroll Saw Pattern.

This Amazing Grace cross is over ten inches tall.

I am a bit of a YouTube junkie. I love watching skilled people make things. There are millions of videos of craftsmen and women doing all types of amazingly creative work. This video by Artes de Garagem is quite interesting.

The DIY scroll saw he makes in this video is not something you would want to use for fine fretwork but I just enjoyed watching the skill and thought that went into the project.

Statue of Liberty Scroll Saw Pattern. Over eighteen inches tall.

This project was a lot of fun to design and to cut. Lady Liberty stands over 18" tall. I was really happy to be back out in the shop.

A few days ago I mentioned that I was a little under the weather. Well it ended up being a long week and I could not get into the shop. It started out as a head cold then turned weird. Friday morning I had a doctors appointment at 9am. As I was showering the world started spinning and I fell to the floor and heap. I didn't lose conciseness but I was totally out of control of my body. After a few moments I regained enough sense to get up and kind of finish getting ready.

I made my doctors appointment and they diagnosed me with positional vertigo. Okay I was not going to kick the bucket so I thought, "no big deal.". Wrong. (big deal!). They gave me this strange therapy name the Epley Maneuver. They said sometimes it works the first try sometimes it can take weeks.

Off to home I go. I soon found out just how fast the the room could spin. If I moved my head to a 45 degree angle to the right it would trigger one of the strangest sensations I have ever experienced. The room would rotate clockwise so fast that I would get instantly ill. I could usually stop it by moving my head again but not always.

To make a long story and weekend short on the fifth therapy it fixed it. It took two days but it finally worked. I had heard of vertigo before but I really did not know anything about it. All I can say is that I hope I never experience it again. To put it mildly it is terrible.

Now that you have heard my sob story here is the good news. I got to spend four hours in the shop tonight. I had designed this Statue of Liberty pattern right before I became ill so I headed to the saw and cut it out.  When you ope the pattern you will see that there is a considerable amount of veining to be cut.

I used a #1 ultra scroll reverse blade to cut all of the top of the pattern. I usually use a larger blade for cutting veining just to make it stand out. In this case that would have made the project get very fragile. Even using the #1 I had to be careful.

The pedestal of the statue is two pieces stacked together. They need to match exactly so I stack cut them together then removed the front of the pedestal and drilled and cut it out.

I finished the project off by sitting her on a cutout of the outline of Liberty island and adding the word Liberty.

Man it felt good to get out in the shop.
