Cameo Box. Intermediate scroll saw pattern.

I am sometimes asked if I could do more advanced projects. Because I produce so many patterns I have often been limited to basic level patterns. It's just a matter of time.

Now that I am retired time is not as much of an issue. I will occasionally try to step up the difficulty just a little. I probably won't do many advanced level patterns. They can take days to design and build. I hope this gives more readers useful patterns.

This Cameo Box would be considered at the low end of intermediate level. The construction of the inner box is just butt joints. There are no hinges to worry with. What makes this a little more difficult than my normal patterns is the amount of fretwork decoration. You will also need to source 1/8" stock for the fretwork overlays. The box is 1/4" thick stock. Obviously you need nice contrast between the box and the fretwork. I used Peruvian walnut for the box. The fretwork is just poplar. Poplar is so white that it made for great contrast. We are not so worried about wood grain in the fretwork. We just need the white color

This is also a great project to practice stack cutting. The lid and bottom can be stack cut as we as the fretwork.

I would suggest you use a #3 scroll reverse blade for the fretwork. The interior cuts are not tiny but some will be tough to cut with a #5 or larger blade.

I hope you enjoy this pattern. I think it would make a nice Mother's Day gift.
