"Freedom Brought to you by Veterans". I want to thank all the men and women who have served our nation. There are approximately 22 million vets in the U.S. today. As a country we have legal and moral responsibilities to these men and women. From the Veterans Health Administrations falsifying data about delays, probably caused by under-funding to the Pentagon ordering California National Guard to pay back reenlistment bonuses. We don't have a great record of taking those responsibilities to heart.
Veterans Day is about people. It's great that it is recognized as a Federal Holiday but first and foremost it has to be about respecting what American veterans have done in service to us all. A holiday, a hand shake and a thank you are fine but good health care including mental health services, education and job placement services have to follow. These are not hand outs they are responsibilities. I'm not saying we do nothing we just have to hold ourselves to the fire when we don't get it right.
It's also not all about the government fixing everything. They can't. It's about businesses implementing programs to give qualified veterans job opportunities. Think about the experience in leadership and responsibility a 20 year old gains from standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Responsible for the lives of hundreds with their actions. I would say that man or woman would make a damn good manager for a company wanting leadership.
The National Coalition for the Homeless stats say that on any given night 130,000 to 200,000 veterans are homeless. Approximately 40% of homeless men are veterans. 47% of those are from the Vietnam war. A large percentage of these men have mental health issues and substance abuse problems. I know most cities have organizations to help these folks. Can we do more?
Want to do more to help our vets? I have tried my best to find a charity that actually helps vets and does not stuff their own pockets. The Fisher House Foundation gets a 96.87 out of 100 from the Charity Navigator group. 91% of total expenses went to actual programs and services for the veterans. I'm far from an expert on these foundations but I had to do my research and make a choice. Do your research and help if you can.
