This is a nice quick gift you can make from some scrap wood. I do recommend a nice hardwood for the project to give is little something extra. I used purple heart and maple. This is the type of project you can easily customize. If you want to keep certain items in the desk tray just get out a ruler and make your own rectangles. Make sure you round the corners. Use a router to round over all the edges. If you don't have a router use sand paper.
Even though this is a simple project it does require precision cuts. If your rectangles are messy it will stand out like a sore thumb. Stay on the pattern line. This is good practice for being accurate.
The project has room for a 1 7/16" clock insert. I chose to use a thermometer insert in mine. You can purchase the inserts at Bear Woods. There are several styles to choose from including floral designs.
I do recommend placing glue on rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from moving on the desk.
