Arnold Schwarzenegger Scroll Saw Portrait. A special guest video by Charles Dearing.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
I have been practicing with a different style of creating scroll saw portrait patterns. I thought I would share this Arnold Schwarzenegger pattern today. The way I have worked in the past the software did all the initial work and I had to clean up the pattern. This style is all hand work from the start.

I still have to work on the technique but I'm starting to get it. This is basically how the best portrait pattern designers do their patterns.

Speaking of the best portrait style designers. Charles Dearing is the best in the world. Take a few minutes to watch as Charles cuts this incredibly beautiful  horse portrait. The pattern is two feet eight inches tall. He has more detailed portraits but I think this is one of his best designs ever. I am normally not a fan of adding color to wood but he did this pattern justice with the color. All I can say is that I bow down to his talent. Charles is a friend for many years and one of the nicest people I have met during my scroll saw career. Thanks Charles for another incredible piece of work.

Do yourself a favor and watch Charles cut this pattern. It's long but it's just fun to watch a master in action. You will pick up lots of valuable information. If you want to try this type of pattern his teaching is invaluable.

If you are interested in cutting patterns the size shown above you have to use spiral blades. Bear Woods has a great selections of spirals to choose from. Spiral blades can take a bit more practice but they have the huge advantage of cutting in any direction. For a nearly three foot patterns they are your go to blade. Most portrait style patterns are cut using spiral blades.

Scroll saw portrait patterns are generally cut from sheets of high quality Baltic birch plywood. The layers of the ply make it very strong. This comes in handy when you are cutting so much away and still need the board to hold together. Imagine trying to cut Charles' 2'8" pattern from a solid piece of wood.

24" X 24" on their website for sale. Because of shipping I don't think they sell larger than that. Trust me when I say that if you cut a 24" X 24" portrait it will be very impressive.
