Sprint Car from a construction grade 2 X 4. Scroll Saw Pattern.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
This wooden toy sprint car is made from a construction grade 2 X 4. It would not be suitable for children who still mouth small parts.
I did use purchased wooden wheels but I included a pattern for the wheels in the pattern book. These are 1 1/2" diameter wheels and can be purchased here. Wooden Wheels Link
You will need three thicknesses of wood for this project. 1 1/2", 1/2" and 1/8". The 1 1/2" is the thickness of the standard 2 X 4. I used my table saw to re-saw the other two thicknesses. This will take two passes, cutting from both sides. I have preformed this type of cut many times but it is an advanced table saw procedure. If you are not completely confident in how to preform this cut then don't do it. I repeat. Do not preform this cut without proper safety training. You can just purchase off the shelf boards. Baltic birch plywood would be a good substitute. It comes in the needed thicknesses.
Just glue two 3/4" boards together for the body of the car.

A band saw and planer are also alternatives if you have them available.

You can see in the picture that I used two push sticks to keep my hands far clear of the blade. There is a high probability of kick back with this cut if you are not very careful. Do not stand directly behind the cut. Stand to one side. When you flip the board to make the second pass it is advisable to put a shim in the kerf of the first cut. This will prevent the kerf from collapsing on the blade and pinching, causing kick back.
