Want to try to scroll with a fret saw?

For years fretwork was cut with a fret saw. It is still used today by many fretwork artists around the world. I have cut a few projects with a fret saw and I can tell you that it is a workout. It does take some practice to produce a fine cut.

The wood blank is placed on a V-slot bench table. You turn the piece with your off hand while cutting with your dominant hand. With practice you can produce fine fretwork without electricity.

I found the most difficult technique was getting the cut started. Once the blade started cutting I could follow the line pretty well. I also found that I was able to control smaller blades easier. A #3 worked best for me but it is slower than a larger blade.  I would also recommend you start out will small projects until your skill advances. I practiced cutting circle patterns. The circles let be practic staying on the line while turning the wood blank.

Here are links to these items on Amazon. They are my affiliate links. The fret saw takes regular scroll saw blades.
