Layered Chess Set Scroll Saw Pattern.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
I have not had time to complete the cutting of all the pieces. The rest are just duplicates of these six pieces. I will probably complete this at some point just so I can have the board myself. In the mean time I wanted to get the pattern out.

I tried to make it a standard set of recognizable pieces. I don't like it when I can't tell that the thing that looks like a space alien is suppose to be a bishop. The game is already hard enough. :)

This is a fairly large set and requires a 16 inch board. Instructions for making the board are included in the pattern as well as below.

This is an extremely easy project to cut other than the fact that you have several pieces to make. The only interior cuts are on the rook. The most difficult part is gluing the pieces together. Here is a tip to keep the pieces from slipping while clamping the glued up pieces. Pinch just a few grains of salt an sprinkle over the glue. Don't over do it, just enough to keep the pieces from moving.

Clamping these is easiest with spring clamps. It also helps to glue the center pieces then let the glue dry. Glue on the arms and let the glue dry. Then glue on the base. I don't have that much patience but that does not make it a bad idea. :)

Here are pictures of each of the pieces.

How to make a chess board: 16" X 16" X 3/4"

Cut 4 light colored wood strips and 4 dark colored wood strips 2" wide X 17.5" long X 3/4" thick.
We need the extra length to make up for the kerf.
Alternate a light strip and a dark strip.
Edge glue the strips together and let the glue cure.
Cut the board again in to 2" strips. You can discard the waste.
Flip every other strip. Ahhh starting to look like a chess board.
Edge glue the strips.
Frame the board to complete the project.
