The primary role of the K9 unit is to search for and locate suspects and evidence. They can also be called on to help find missing persons, explosives and drugs. The dog and handler undergo intensive training.
The officer who takes on the job of K9 handler is taking on a 24 hour a day job. They are often called out for emergencies at any hour. There are many special attributes required to be a K9 handler. Not the least of which is the ability to bond with the dog. Not everyone can do this.
The families of the officer also have to be on board with the challenges of keep the dog maintained and fit. Like I said this is a 24 hour a day job.
I have a great deal of respect for all the people in law enforcement. That includes much more than just the officers you see on the street. There are many more behind the scenes personnel who are just as important to our communities. It takes a large team of people to keep law and order. When you have the opportunity that the time to say thanks. This pattern might be one way to thank the special team of dog and handler.
