I needed something just large enough to hold my favorite reading material in the library. I had some 1/4" thick Baltic Birch plywood so that's what I used. It will hold a standard size magazine standing up or on edge. The interior is 11.5" long, 9 inches tall and 5.5" deep. The construction is slot and tab so it assembles easily.
To add a little scroll saw embellishment I added a stylized fretwork fish to each end.
You will notice the gap at the bottom of each side. I changed this in the final pattern because when you placed the magazines on their edges they tended to slide out. I did not re-cut the pattern but I think it will fit. If not you may have to trim it just a little.
Safety Ruler: Simple solution to a painful problem.
When I am cutting down scroll saw patterns I often use an Xacto knife to cut the straight lines of the pattern. I often want those edges to line up with the edge of the board. Sometimes I need a straight edge so I can tape two parts of a larger pattern together.
I would use a ruler as a straight edge to make the cuts. I have been cut more times with the Xacto knife blade than than I have with all the other tools in my shop combined.
The other day I found this Safety Ruler on Amazon and ordered it. It was a little pricey at $17.99 but the reviews looked good and it looked well made.
I used it for today's project and I love it. This will be on my workbench from now on. Two things make it much better than what I was using.
1. It has a flip up shield to protect your fingers from cuts. Your fingers stay safely behind the shield.
When you only need the ruler the shield fold down out of the way.
2. It has a rubber grip on the bottom so the ruler does not slip while making the cut.
Both features work great and solve a couple of minor issues that can be big issues when you cut your finger. I'm nursing a cut finger right now and those sharp blades leave my finger sore for a few days.
