This fossil scroll saw pattern is cut from a single board using the bevel cut technique. The bevel cut keeps the grain of the wood continuous to make the piece look carved instead of applied.

This book has this pattern in two sizes. Let me say upfront that the smaller one is difficult to cut because of the bevel. There is barely enough room for the bevel without cutting off parts you want to keep. The picture above is my cutting of the smaller pattern. As you can see it did work but I had to be precise in the cuts. Any blade over a #1 will probably not work. The larger pattern should not be a problem.

Prepare the wood and pattern.

Make the interior cuts first. Next cut the exterior of the rock. Save the bevel cut for last.

Make test cuts in the same material with the same blade to get the bevel correct.

You want about a 50% rise. I used a #1 blade and 1/2" thick wood. My angle was ~ 3 degrees.

Find a good spot to drill the bevel cut starter hole. I started near the bottom of the tail. My wood was thin enough that I did not have to angle the drill to drill the starter hole. If you use thicker wood you may need to angle the drill to match the angle of the bevel cut.

I use hot glue to hold the piece extruded from the background. A few dabs of hot glue on the back will keep the fossil in place.

WEN 6550 12.5-Inch 15A Benchtop Thickness Planer with Granite Table

This WEN planer gets very good reviews for the price. If you need a planer this might be worth taking a look at. I watched a couple of youtube videos on this machine and they were impressed with its performance.

Adjust depth to plane off anywhere from 0 to 3/32 of an inch with each pass
Fan-assisted dust port removes sawdust from workpiece

It's a clock, clock. Requires a 2 3/4" clock insert. Sometimes I pick up a piece of wood and ask it what it should be. This piece of yellow heart wanted to be a clock.

This piece of yellow heart was one inch thick. Yellow heart cuts easily but it reminded me of a problem that I hear from many new scrollers. I often receive an email asking why the edges of the cuts are not straight. When they try to remove the cutout part it will come out one direction but not the other. The piece is effectively shaped like a wedge.

Assuming that the table is square to the blade here are a couple of suggestions to correct this proble.

Make sure that the blade tension is correct. New scrollers often under tension the blade thinking it will break. This under tension will result in the blade flexing and give you a curved cut. Add a bit more tension and see if that helps.

Pay attention to how you are pushing the blade through the wood. Don't apply side pressure on the blade as you cut. Relax your grip from time to time an allow the blade to come back to 90 degrees.

Do not rush the cut. Let the blade have time to remove the sawdust from the kerf.

Sometimes you have to use a smaller blade to cut a pattern. The smaller the blade the more likely it is to flex in the cut. If you are using a very small blade in thick wood then you absolutely have to slow way down. Of course, if you can use a larger blade it will cut more efficiently. Sometimes we just don't have that option.

I wanted the chess board to be as whimsical as the pieces. I finally decided on this 3D chess board.It does take a while to build but I think it adds a lot of fun to the set. You can use a standard chess board if you like. Just make sure the squares are at least 1.75" square.

If you only cut the chess pieces this is a very easy project to cut. There are few interior holes and all of the pieces can be easily stack cut to make the project go much faster than it appears.

Painting is optional. I cut my pieces from 1/4" thick Baltic birch. It would also look great cut from two contrasting colors of hard woods. Walnut and soft maple come to mind.
