This recipe box goes with the recipe stand I published yesterday. It is designed to hold 4'X 6" recipe cards.

This box uses finger joints. I'll be honest that I would not normally do a finger joint box on the scroll saw. I have a finger joint jig that I would use. The parts would be cut out on the table saw but this is a scroll saw blog so we will use the scroll saw.

Cutting finger joints on the scroll saw take a little finesse. You want the fingers to fit snug. I usually test cut the pattern with the wood I am using to see where I need to cut to get that sung fit. Depending on the exact thickness of the wood you may need to cut outside the pattern line to make the finger wider or inside the pattern line to make it thinner. It always best to cut it too tight and sneak up on the fit.

This will be good practice for cutting straight lines. When I am cutting a project like this I never make a turn with the scroll saw. I cut to the turn then back out and come in from the other direction to get a perfect right angle. This makes for a more accurate fitting box.

The ornamentation matches the decoration of the stand. This is optional and could be exchanged for a more personal decoration. You could add the recipient's name to the top of the box. "Grandma's Recipes".

I kept the finger joints to a minimum. There is one on the lid and four on the box.

The box requires two small brass hinges. The need to be 3/4" wide and fit 1/4" thick wood.

This is another difference when using the scroll saw to make this box. If I were using the table saw I would make the lid and box one piece. I would then use the table saw to cut the lid away from the box. When using the scroll saw you have to be careful that you get the pieces squared up when you glue the pieces together.

Make sure you pre-drill the holes before you try to drive the brass screws. They will strip out verst easily. I also apply a little soap the the screw before I try to screw it into the wood.

The pencil holder is held in place by a friction fit. This is optional. You will also have to shorten the pencil about an inch and a half.
