Battery LED Strip Review:

I have made a couple of projects lately that used LED lighting. The kits worked great but needed 120vac power to operate. That's fine for some applications but it would be nice to have a battery powered LED strip for projects that are not close to power.

A quick search on Amazon came up with this battery-powered LED strip kit. The kit comes with 6.5 feet of strip LEDs. There are 60 LEDs on the strip and they can cut between each LED so you can get almost any size you need. The LED strip is also waterproof making it useful for outdoor projects.

There is also a remote control to change the different modes for the lights. You can change the color, brightness, flash rate, and on/off. The remote max distance is 10 meters. I did not test it that far but it worked from across my living room.

The included battery pack requires 3 AA batteries(not included).
The LED strip has an adhesive tape on the back. It's pretty sticky but I'm not sure I would trust it for long-term outdoor use. A little hot glue should hold it in place permanently.

The battery pack has an on/off switch. The remote also has an on/off switch. They recommend that you turn off the switch on the battery pack when it will not be used for long periods of time to save battery life.

The LED's are bright and colorful. The modes are fun to play with and will add nice effects for some projects. One mode that I miss is a chase light mode.
One thing that you have to understand about these LED strips is that you are going to throw away the extra strip that you cut off. There is no way to use the rest of the LED strip after they are cut. The kit is $10 so it's affordable enough to use for a nice project.

The key to this product will be battery life. LED's are very low current devices so I expected the battery life to be decent.  The manufacturer claims 5 hours of continuous use. My test showed that to be accurate. Once the batteries in the pack get low the remote control will stop working even when the LEDs are still working.

For projects that can be close to a power outlet, I would use an LED kit with an AC power supply. 5 hours of use before the batteries die limit the usefulness of this battery powered kit. That said there are some projects where this would be needed. I think rechargeable batteries would be useful if they can power this kit effectively. I did not test this kit with rechargeable batteries but from experience, I would not expect to get the 5 hours of use with rechargeables.
