I'm not sure if this should be called a basket or a bowl. I'm going to call it a basket. The basket is 7.25" diameter and only 1.5" tall. There was no plan for a particular use as I was designing this pattern. It just is what it is. It's probably more of a look what I made kind of project.
I design a lot of patterns and coming up with ideas is something I have spent a lot of time practicing. Sometimes there is a theme to design a pattern around like "Christmas" or "NCAA Football". There are objects to design like clocks, toys. tools and gadgets.
There is one method I use that sometimes works and sometimes is a bust. I'll let you decide which this project is. I will sit down in front of the computer with my drawing program open. I will just start doodling patterns and see if something looks interesting. If it does I will try to imagine what kind of pattern could be made for the random design,
That is exactly what happened to with this pattern. I had this sawtooth looking design on the screen. It came about by rotating a shape around a circle. I liked the shape so I used a contour tool in my software to create a few layers of the shape. At that point, I knew it was starting to look like a layered bowl type of pattern so I simulated the rotation of the layers to see what kind of pattern it made when stacked together.
I kind of liked the pattern that happened so I finished the design by adding a top ring and I had a completed pattern for this stacked basket/bowl.
When you get ready to stack the rings and glue them together here is the sequence and amount of rotation. In the picture above you see the bottom two rings as they were cut.
Glue the bottom ring to the base.
Line up the second ring to the first in the orientation it was cut. Then rotate it one lobe and glue it to the ring below. In the following pictures, you see that each ring is rotated one lobe until the stack is completed. To complete the project cut the top ornamentation ring and glue it to the top of the basket.
Just for fun, I used the analog clock timer project from yesterdays post to track the cut time of this project. 1 hour and 14 minutes total cut time. 30 minutes of that time was for the stacked rings. The remaining time was for the top ornamentation ring.
