Spoon Tray Scroll Saw Pattern.

This spoon tray can be cut in just a few minutes and is something every household can use. I know that many of you are starting to cut projects for your spring craft shows. It's nice to have some products that can be cut quickly. I spent less than half an hour completing this spoon tray including the finish.

Food Safe Wood Finishes:

Any time you make or sell a product that comes in contact with food you will get questions about the finish. Customers want to know that the finish you use is food safe. The truth is that all modern finishes are food safe once they are cured.

There are two catches with this fact. The rule is that you have to let the finish cure for 30 days at room temperature. The second catch is that many customers will not accept this as a fact. They have heard that finishes like pure tung oil and mineral oil are food safe. They simply do not want to hear that you used polyurethane even if you explain that it is safe once cured.

It is a good idea to use an accepted food safe finish and make that fact a selling point. The downside is that the common food safe finishes don't provide much protection of the wood. Many of them will need to be reapplied after some period of time.

Mineral oil is one of the more commonly known finishes for food contact wooden products. It also has very poor water resistance and needs to be reapplied frequently. One common DIY finish is a combination of mineral oil and beeswax. Mix five-part mineral oil to one-part beeswax over low heat. Once blended well let it set up in a jar. You can then apply it as a paste. This gives better water protection if applied often.

One great sales tactic is to have your mineral oil/beeswax mixture on display with your wooden food products. Some folks who sell spoons and cutting boards will even upsell the finish.

Scroll Saw Blades From Bear Woods.

Do yourself and your scroll saw a favor. Buy high-quality scroll saw blades. The really do make a difference. I like and recommend two brands. Pegas and Niqua(Flying Dutchman). There is no reason to use inferior blades. These blade last longer and are sharper. The good news is that they are no more expensive than other lesser brands.
