Jesus Scroll Saw Pattern.

This pattern of Jesus comes in two sizes. One is 8" X 8" and the other is 10" X 10". I am showing the simulated project painted black on a wood backer board. This just made it stand out better. You can make it from natural wood with or without the backer board or paint.

I made this pattern to show the editing process I often go through to get the pattern looking the way I like.

Original
From www.freepik.com

I thought I would show you some behind the scenes of pattern design with this pattern.  Many times pattern designers will use freely available clipart to begin a pattern. Very rarely will the clipart be suitable for the scroll saw without some editing. This is a good example of that. You may have to look closely but there are several edits in the hair, beard, and body.

Edited

Some editing is done for more a pleasing design and some are to make the pattern easier to cut. This pattern needed both. If you look at the original image closely you will see several "floaters". A floater is a piece that is not connected to anything and would break away if cut on the scroll saw.

There were also several areas where the lines were too thin. These thin areas are susceptible to breaking easily so they need to be fixed.

Notice above the eye on the right. In the original, it was very weak. I added some extra hair to strengthen that part of the pattern.

I did not like the harsh lines in the body on the original so I removed them. I slightly rounded out the muscles and changed the armpit for a more natural look.

To give the piece some strength I needed to lengthen the hair so it connects to the bottom frame. I just freehanded the extra hair.

The sun rays were added for strength and I just liked the way they looked. I thought it added some interest.

I hope some of you found this interesting. I know some of you do your own patterns and maybe this will help a little with your designs.
