Ballerina Dancers Scroll Saw Pattern.

This is a simple pattern that your daughter or granddaughter may enjoy in their room. I kept the detail very simple. You could also eliminate the veining and make this a silhouette pattern with black paint.

There are two sizes of the pattern included. The optional backer board gives the delicate cut strength.

When I design patterns that I think children will like I don't do a good job of including the girls. I tend to be a rubber band gun kind of pattern designer.  I know there are many of you who like to make gifts for your grandchildren and children. I am always open to suggestions, especially for patterns young girls will enjoy.

A Word About a Sponsor:

One thing all scrollers have in common is that we need something to cut. We also need and use thin boards that are not always easy to find locally. If you don't have the tools to mill your own boards then buying online is a great option. Notice I said great, not cheap. Labor, convenience, and quality do have a price associated with them. The good news for us scrollers is that we don't use large pieces of wood to finish a project. Furniture makers have it much worse.

There are several online sellers of wood. Some of them cater to scrollers and have thin stock available. One that does and happens to be a sponsor of mine is Heritage Wood Specialties

Let me say up front that they do not have the quickest shipping available. What they do have is a high-quality product. There are very few if any business who sells clear glue-up boards in wide widths. Order ahead of time whenever possible. They make the orders on request so lead time can be 2 to 3 weeks.

I especially enjoy their "Scrollsaw Blanks". These boards are glue-ups in very wide widths and thicknesses. The glue-ups are very well made. They choose clear boards and color match the glue-ups(Pictures below). The glue-ups are then sanded to thickness. These boards are simply beautiful.

A word of wisdom. Thin boards are difficult to ship. Differences in humidity from one area to another can cause boards to warp/bow. Heritage does one of the best jobs I have seen trying to prevent wood movement. They select lumber that is dry and stable. They cut and plastic wrap the boards for shipping. The boards are shipped in a cardboard box.

When I get my order I leave the boards wrapped in the plastic until I need them. I do open them to look at what I got but then I wrap them back up and keep them in the box. You will never find a seller who can guarantee perfectly flat boards. That is just not possible. You want a seller who knows the best techniques to make sure you receive the boards in the best condition possible.

Here are pictures of an order I received.

The boards came wrapped in plastic and were all extremely flat. Not perfect but better than expected.

Look at this 12" X 16" X 1/4" walnut glue-up. Notice how well color matched this board is. Almost seamless. No sapwood or defects were visible. There is about 1mm of warp across 12 inches. That will change under some conditions in your shop.

Now keep in mind that I receive these boards every month. It is how I am paid for advertising. I do that so I can keep track of the quality of the product. I have had this arrangement for a few years and have always been satisfied. The quality is very consistent.

I do my best to work with companies that I can trust. Heritage has proven to be a supplier that continuously delivers a quality product. Buying wood is full of challenges. You have to have proper expectations. If you understand what to expect then you are very likely to have a good experience with Heritage Wood Specialties.

No extra product or money was exchanged for this quick review. I did this because I continue to get email every month asking where to buy thin boards.
