Flamingos at Sunset Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

These guys are about 7.5" tall. The pattern calls for 1/4" thick wood but you can use just about any combination you have handy. If you plan to use hardwoods then Walnut and Maple are a good combination.

The only pink colored wood that I know of is Pink Ivory. Here is an eBay auction if you are interested. A little over 500 board feet for $12,000 plus $500 shipping. :) Maybe not....

The word flamingo comes from the Spanish word, 'flamenco', meaning fire, which refers to their bright colors.

There are six flamingo species.

It is said that flamingos can detect rain many miles away. No one knows how they accomplish this but it is basic to their survival.

The bright color of the flamingo feathers comes from the presence of carotenoid pigment found in the algae and crustaceans they eat.

Baby flamingos are born on mud nests. They are grey colored at birth and gain a pink color from the food they eat. Young flamingos take up to three years to attain their full mature plumage.

Scroll Saw Sanders: Are they useful?

I get this question a couple times a year. What are scroll saw sanders and are they any good?

Spoiler alert. I find them nearly useless.

Scroll saw sanders are small strips of sandpaper with plastic tabs on each end. You install them into your scroll saw just like you install the blade. You then have a variable speed sander. The idea is that you can get into the interior fretwork and sand away the fuzzies. You could theoretically sand away cut errors and etc. The reality for me is that there are easier and faster ways to do these jobs.

Many times the sanders are too large to fit where you need them to go.

I suppose that if you don't have any other sanders then maybe these could be useful. Personally, I would just hand sand before I would use these scroll saw sanders. These sanding sticks do come in handy sometimes.

I'm sure there are some folks who use these and find them useful. I am not one of those people but if they work for you then I don't see any harm.

These are also fairly easy to make yourself. Here is a video of a guy who makes some for his pin end scroll saw. You could use the same technique with plain end blades also. I have just folded over
a thin sheet of sandpaper and put it in the clamps. I would not recommend doing this a lot but for quick jobs, I don't think it will damage the clamps.
