This was a sign I designed as a request from a new homeowner. They wanted something that was a little more elegant so this is what I came up with. Maybe some of you will enjoy it also.
There are two sizes of this pattern included. The small sign is 10.5" wide and the larger sign is 13.5" wide.
You can cut off the chain hanging loops if you want to use another method to install the sign.
Finishing Outdoor Signs:
The Welcome to our Home sign in today's pattern will often be hung outside on the front of a house. It will often have some protection from the elements by being under a porch roof. Helmsman Spar Urethane is a finish that will greatly extend the life of wood that is exposed to sunlight, rain, and temperature changes.
With enough exposure, wood signs will age and deteriorate over time. If the sign has some protection from direct exposure and you use a Spar Urethane you can get several years of use from a wooden sign outside.
One component of sunlight is ultraviolet light. UV light is responsible for most of the damage to wood. UV light breaks down the lignin in the wood. Lignin is a component that strengthens the cell walls of wood.
You see this process in action every day when you look at privacy fences in back yards. Over time they turn grey and the fibers of the wood start to separate and flake. This is primarily caused by UV light destroying the lignin and causing the cells to lose their strength and structure.
To combat this process, outdoor finishes contain UV blockers. It is basically like putting sunscreen on before you go swimming.
SPAR Urethane also dries to a hard protective coat on top of the wood. This hard surface is what gives wood protection from water/rain. It basically seals the wood in a hard raincoat.
To protect from extreme temperature changes they use oils to give the wood elasticity so it can expand and contract with the temperature without breaking down.
There are no finishes that will make wood last forever when exposed to sun, rain, and temperature changes. Finishes like Helmsman Spar Urethane give the wood a fighting chance to last long enough to be useful.
Another finish that does a pretty good job is outdoor paint. If you like the look of a painted sign then that is another good option.
