The pattern for this stand comes in two sizes. The small stand(pictured) will hold up to a 2.75" diameter object. The large stand will hold up to a 5" diameter object.
I painted this project gold because I used Baltic birch plywood. Sometimes BB ply looks okay unfinished but in this case, it needed a finish. nice hardwood might look better.
The small stand is cut from 1/4" thick wood and the larger pattern is for 1/2" thick wood.
The large stand is pretty big. It is nearly 11" wide. It might look good as a Christmas table centerpiece with flowers or a candle.
All the separate parts are assembled with slot and tab construction and glue. If you cut the slots and tabs for a tight fit you could skip the glue and make it a knockdown display.

What is intarsia? Intarsia is the process of cutting and shaping wood of different species to make art. The colors and shades of the image are created by using different species of wood. The grain pattern is also used to give an extra illusion of depth. Each piece is contoured by sanding to give depth and roundness to the project. Seldom, is stain or artificial colors used.
Intarsia takes practice. You need to cut accurately. It takes time to develop the contouring skills required to give a sense of depth. The good news is that even beginner patters look great so you can start off easy and work your way up. Judy's web page has patterns for every level of artist. She also caries training material and supplies to get started in this incredible art. If you really become intrigued then you can sign up for one of her classes. Her studio is located in the beautiful hills of Tennessee.
