Sleeping Dog Shelf/Door/Fence Sitter. This little guy comes in two sizes. The small pattern is 6" long and will fit above most doors or on a shelf. The larger pattern is 9" long and will work on fences or larger horizontal overhangs.
Scroll saw projects don't get much simpler than this. There is one interior cut for the eye. Two short veins for the nose and mouth. One 3/4" thick board for the body and 1/4" wood for the legs and ear.
Roundover the top of the legs and ear to give him a little contour. Sand and finish and you are ready to sit the puppy on the ledge for a nap.
Drilling Entry Holes for Scroll Saw Projects.
To get the cleanest cuts possible you want to start the blade at an appropriate position. Whenever possible drill your entry hole near a point on the pattern where there is a transition. Avoid starting your cut in the middle of a line. It is much easier to complete the cut at the transition without leaving a nub that may need to be sanded off.
If you are cutting the interior of a circle, where there is no transition then just drill close to the interior of the circle. If you leave a nub then use the edge of the teeth of the blade to nibble the nub away as much as possible. Complete the cleanup with sanding.
This interior cut has a couple of places where you could start. At the top of the trigger is probably the best choice. On the backside of the trigger the angle is too tight and would be a poor choice if better position were available. The bottom of the trigger would also work fine.
There are several places where you could start this interior cut. The corner works fine but you will have to turn immediately after you enter the corner. A slightly better spot would be 2a. You can begin the cut with a straight line without turning. Either one will work.
3 is another entry spot that works. Again there are several spots that work in this cut.
I always drill an entry hole on the outside of the pattern also. Some people like to start cutting the exterior of the pattern from the edge of the board. I find that this can cause problems because it weakens the board a little. Most of the time this is not a big deal but I am just in the habit of using an extra entry hole on the exterior.
