Today, 8/26/2020 is National Dog Day. It is estimated that there are over 90 million pet dogs in the U.S. There are only 129 million households in the U. S. so you can see how important our dogs are to us.
Dogs have been kept as pets/companions for nearly 15,000 years. The Bonn-Oberkassel dog was found buried with two humans dating from that time. There is a special bond between dogs and humans.
Scientists have found that dog owners are statistically shown to live longer than non-dog owners. Dog owners have a 24% risk reduction for death from any cause. On top of that, dog owners have significantly better outcomes after major health issues.
Interacting with dogs can boost your production of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. These can lead to a sense of well-being and help lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
I have personally seen the positive results of dog ownership. Our little multi-poo, Holly has made a significant difference in the lives of my wife and I after we retired. My wife retired well before me and was definitely feeling the effects of loneliness during the day, home alone. When we got Holly that changed and made a huge difference for my wife.
In recent months there has been a big jump in dog ownership. The reason is clear. People who are stuck at home want and need companionship. With that benefit comes a big responsibility to be equally as positive an influence on the dog. Dogs enjoy interacting with people but they need exercise, affection, health care, and stimulus to be all they can be. If you have recently brought a dog into your family then, please give them the care they deserve.
