Ornate Desk Clock Scroll Saw Pattern

Download Below

This ornate desk clock is cut from 3/4" wood. The clock is a 2 3/4" insert with a 2 3/8" mounting hole. Some 2 3/4" inserts use a 2 5/16" mounting hole. Make sure you check which clock you have before you cut the hole.

How the Soup is Made:

Some of you eagle-eyed readers will probably have noticed that I have used the same flourish on a few different patterns lately. That is one of the tricks I use to put out so many patterns. If you look at the four patterns below you will see the same flourish used in different ways. I don't normally use the same art so close in time so it is not always obvious.

I often spend hours just trying to use the flourish in a way that looks good. It does not always work. I will often add parts to the flourish or remove parts. This is one of those flourishes that I like but still have not found the best way to use it. I will have to put it away for a few months and come back to it later to see what comes out with a fresh look.

If you are learning to design your own scroll saw patterns, never delete any art. I have one file that is 43 megs of just old clipart and drawings. That file is more than 15 years old and just keeps growing.

Here is the original flourish.

Glue Squeeze Out Tip!

Glue squeeze-out can be a big problem if you don't get it cleaned off before you apply the finish. It can be easy to overlook so it is a good idea to make a habit of looking over the piece closely before you add the finish.

There are many ways to clean up the glue and this is just one tip. Any time you glue two straight edges together, the glue can squeeze out along the joint. These small beads of glue can be difficult to wipe off with a wet paper towel. Here is what I do.

I fold a small strip of paper in half. I run the fold along the joint. Because the paper is so thin it gets under even the smallest blobs of glue.

Only use the fold for one swipe. Then refold to a different clean area of the paper.

This tip works so well that I do it even when I don't see the glue at the joints. I will often see glue on the paper after the swipe that I did not see on the wood.
