Thanksgiving Turkey Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download the Pattern Below

I am keeping it simple with this pattern. The turkey is cut from 1/4" thick BB ply. There are only three interior cuts. If you have strong painting skills this would be a project that could use some color.

This guy is a little over 10" wide. If you want to use 1/2" thick wood you could print at 200% and have a very large turkey for your front yard. He would be over 20" wide.

Scroll Saw Ready Boards?

There are many scroll saw patterns that call for thin boards. 1/4" and 1/2" thick are both common. Occasionally the pattern will even call for 1/8" thick boards. One of the most common questions I get from new scrollers is where to buy thin boards.

Unfortunately, it is not always easy to find the thin scroll saw ready boards locally. You may find some craft boards at Home Depot. These are often poplar and red oak. Not the best choices but something to start with.

If you have the tools to mill your own thin boards you will save lots of money but of course, you have to have the tools. A band saw Planner, and table saw are all pretty much required. That is not an inexpensive option. Even if you have the funds you may not have space. So what do you do?

Buying scroll saw ready boards online is an option. Trust me when I say that you will have some sticker shock. Nice hardwood is not cheap. The good news is that we don't need a lot of wood to make projects on our scroll saws.

There are sites that specifically sell hardwoods online. A couple that I have used is Heritage Wood Specialties and Ocooch Hardwoods. I like both of these sites but I also want to take about a couple of places where you can sometimes find a deal.

Ebay.com can be a good place to keep an eye on for good deals on boards. Search for "thin boards" and "scroll saw ready boards". You have to pay attention to what you are buying. Make sure you watch the seller's positive feedback percentage. If it is not over 95% I usually move on.

Also, make sure you understand what the shipping cost will be. I just looked at an ebay seller who has ten 1/4" X 8" X 12" back walnut boards for $53 no shipping charge. They have a 99.3% positive feedback and a large number of sales. You can also order five of the boards for $34.

I cannot attest that this is a good product because I have never purchased from them but I have purchased from several eBay sellers and they have all been accepted and a decent price. You do take a small risk so you need to know what your risk threshold is.

Another option is Etsy.com. They are known for sellers with arts and crafts but many of them sell supplies also. I have run into great deals on Etsy. Here is a search link for thin boards on Etsy.

I am not recommending any particular seller on eBay or Etsy because they come and go. I have personally had good luck on both sites. I don't buy much from these sites because I have to tools to mill my own thin boards. I have purchased enough to have a positive impression of the buys I have made.
