Hummingbirds are birds native to the Americas and constituting the biological family Trochilidae. They are the smallest of birds, most species measuring 7.5–13 cm (3–5 in) in length. The smallest extant hummingbird species is the 5 cm (2.0 in) bee hummingbird, which weighs less than 2.0 g (0.07 oz). The largest hummingbird species is the 23 cm (9.1 in) giant hummingbird, weighing 18–24g (0.63–0.85 oz).

They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings, which flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing-flapping rates, which vary from around 12 beats per second in the largest species, to in excess of 80 in some of the smallest. Of those species that have been measured in wind tunnels, their top speeds exceed 15 m/s (54 km/h; 34 mph) and some species can dive at speeds in excess of 22 m/s (79 km/h; 49 mph).[1][2]

Hummingbirds have the highest mass-specific metabolic rate of any homeothermic animal.[3] To conserve energy when food is scarce and nightly when not foraging, they can go into torpor, a state similar to hibernation, and slow their metabolic rate to 1/15th of its normal rate.[4]

After taking a couple of days off to celebrate Christmas I am behind on email even more than usual. I will be working on getting as caught up as possible this next week. I'll do my best but you may have to resend the email if you do not hear from me and need a reply.

I am still receiving orders for the 2020 Christmas ornaments. I stopped taking orders on the 23rd. Because of the time involved, I won't be taking more orders. I am now in the process of updating the Scrollsaw Workshop Catalog and that demands all of my free time right now.

 UPDATE COMMING:

Speaking of the USB and DVD Scrollsaw Workshop catalog. Sometime in the first half of January, I will have the catalog updated with the 2020 patterns. Anyone who purchased the catalog in October-December will be able to update via download for free. When the catalog is available I will send out a notice.

I know some of you will just not make the time frame for the free update. I'm sorry. The only way I can make the DVD and USB drive available is to charge for them. Of course, the complete catalog is available for free online.

Let me explain the price of the catalog. The DVD is $20 plus shipping to over 50 countries. The USB version is $23 plus shipping but only ships to the US. The only free update is for those who ordered the previous year in October-December.

Orion Motor Tech Upgraded 50W CO2 Laser Engraving Machine 12 x 20 Inch Work Table, Laser Engraver & Cutter with Digital LCD Real Time Data Power Supply, LightBurn Software for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux

I own a couple of laser engravers. I have a Full Spectrum that was close to $5000. I also own one of these 50w Chinese lasers that cost under $2000. I like both of them but if you want to get started with less expense then this Orion Motor Tech is not a bad choice. It comes with Lightburn software which is excellent. They claim it is 50w but it is actually just a 40w output laser. They fudge the way they rate it. 40 watts is enough to engrave and cut up to 1/4" thick wood.

This is one of those purchases that require homework. There is a lot to learn to get the most out of a laser engraver. If you do not have reasonable computer skills then this is not a tool that you will find easy to use. There are tons of resources online to learn how to use the laser but it takes some searching.

  • FOR HOME AND BUSINESS: Our 50-watt laser tube offers high-resolution standard optics and the 12” x 20” (300 x 500mm) cutting surface provides over 2.5 square feet of working area to fit all your mid-size projects. Visible red dot pointer for better guidance & fast prep time.
  • UPGRADED DIGITAL DISPLAY: New Ruida digital controls provide an intuitive user experience to perform final image edits and adjust laser operations. A transparent acrylic glass cover allows observation of the engraving process, helping you correct misplacements when necessary.
  • ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES: New Auto-Shutdown Sensor immediately shuts off the laser system upon opening the cover door. The built-in air compression ventilator and air-assisted laser head ensure superior ventilation through an aluminum foil vent piping exit.
  • LIGHTBURN SOFTWARE INCLUDED: LightBurn Software works with Win 7, 8, 10, MacOS(10.11 or higher, 64bit only), and Linux systems, giving you complete control over all Orion Motor Tech CO2 Laser Engravers and most other DSP controlled laser machines. A license will be automatically sent in your order receipt email.
  • COMPLETE CAPABILITY: Engraving Speed: 0-500 mm/s. Cutting Speed: 0-80 mm/s. Adjustable resolution up to 4500 dpi. The user manual and customer service support helps ease the installation and troubleshooting process.
