Three layers of parts.
I have always had an interest in western art. Frederic Remington has always been one of my favorite artists. I am especially inspired by his bronze sculptures.
When I was young my grandfather lived with us for a while. He loved to read Louis L'Amour western novels. I am pretty sure one of those was the first real book I ever read.
While my grandfather lived with us, Gunsmoke was mandatory television. We only had one television so we all gathered in the living room at night to watch our parent's favorite shows. As children, we only got to choose the shows on Saturday morning. Gunsmoke and Perry Mason were at the top of my grandfather's list. Roy Rogers, The Rifleman, The Lone Ranger, and Maverick were all great shows as far as I was concerned.

As I became a teen I started watching the early Clint Eastwood westerns. Then I was completely hooked. A friend and I spent several hours at a Clint Eastwood western film marathon. We watched four of Eastwoods westerns in a row. If I remember correctly we paid $2 to get in. :) We thought about going again the next day but we did not have another $2.
Below are a couple more options for materials that might look good.
Simple but Important: Dry Assembly.

The assembly of yesterday's tray pattern was pretty simple. All the joints were slot and tab. As long as to cut the slots and tabs accurately the assembly went smoothly. The problem is that we rarely get a perfect fit the first time.
I normally want tabs to fit into slots snugly. Because of this I often overcut the tabs and undercut the slots. After I do a test fit(Dry Assemble), I adjust the tabs and slots to fit. Sometimes I sand them and sometimes I take them back to the scroll saw for adjustment.
The important point here is that I always do a dry assembly before I commit the glue to the joint. I know this sounds obvious but it is easy to get excited and overlook the simple stuff.
The more complex the assembly the more important it is to dry assemble first. It's one thing to have to recut a part of an assembly but it's another thing to have to recut a whole assembly because it won't fit into the next assembly. It's just worth the few minutes it takes.
There are times when you will need to recut a part. I have spent an hour trying to adjust a part to fit that would have taken me five minutes to recut. Don't get stubborn. I wish I could follow my own advice.
