This small jewelry dish is 3.5" X 3.5" X 1.5". The pattern comes in two shapes. Square and round. The pattern calls for 1/4" thick wood. I used Baltic birch plywood. The project is six layers thick.
I call it a jewelry dish but it started out as just a decoration for Valentine's Day. For some reason, I felt the need to make it something useful. It is small enough to sit beside the sink and hold rings while you wash. You can use it for whatever you think it is. :)
I did not cut the round pattern but this simulated image will give you an idea of what it looks like. The round pattern is a bit larger at 4" in diameter.
White Knuckles:
For the new scroll saw owners out there let me give you a very important tip. Holding the board as you cut it with a scroll saw requires only a gentle touch. Pay attention to your hands while you cut. If you feel tension from holding the board too tight then try to lighten your grip. You want to find the balance where the board does not jump up and down and your hand is relaxed.
Ninety percent of the time you only need a couple of fingers to hold the board down on the table. Of course, if you are using the hold-down foot on the scroll saw it is less of an issue. The problem is that the hold-down foot gets in the way. Most scrollers take it off.
The ten percent of the time that you need to hold tighter takes a while to learn. When you turn a sharp turn you will often need to grip a little tighter. Very thick or dense wood may require a stronger grip.
It is not uncommon to sit in front of the scroll saw for extended periods of time. If you use a gorilla grip your hand will fatigue. You will have a much more difficult time following the pattern line. After several months you may even injure your hand and need medical attention.
The technique to solve this problem is simply to pay attention to your hands while you cut. If your knuckles or fingertips are turning white then you are probably holding the board too tight.
One more quick tip is this. If you are fighting the board to hold it down, check the blade. If you have the blade upside down it will jump all over the place. The teeth of the blade need to point down. I know this sounds obvious to seasoned scrollers but I am talking to the new scroll saw owners here.
