It is hard to believe but Spring is not that far off. It will be time to de-winterize the boat and plan that first fishing trip of the year. Approximately 46 million anglers fish in a given year. They generate about $48 billion in retail sales. I think that deserves a plaque.

The plaque is 10.25" tall and just over 13" wide.

Hobbies are good for your mental and physical health.

The last several months have been difficult for many people's physical and mental health. We all know that regular sleep, a healthy diet, and exercise are keys to preventing many health issues.

Do you know what else can have a substantial impact on your well being? Taking up a fun hobby. When you spend time doing something you enjoy, chemical messengers(known as neurotransmitters), such as dopamine, are released in your body. Dopamine helps us feel pleasure.

This natural reward system is key for minimizing depression, anxiety, and even physical health issues. The best thing about dopamine is that there is no copay. All you have to do is enjoy what you are doing to get a dose of feel good.

This reward system can kick in even if you are already feeling depressed. When you feel your mood fading, go out in the shop and make something. There is a very good chance that your mood will improve. Who knew that doing something fun can help make us happy and healthy? I know it sounds ridiculously obvious but many people will get in a rut and miss the obvious.

Depression and poor mental health can cause physical problems like muscle pain, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, and worse. If you can get even limited relief from these symptoms, simply by enjoying a hobby then that is a win in my book.

I am not saying that taking up scrolling will cure the physical and mental effects of the pandemic. I am at an age and physical condition that feeling 10% better is something to look forward to. If I can get that 10% just by going to my shop then that's a pretty good deal.

Encourage family and friends to participate in a hobby. Reading, woodworking, cooking, and art are just a few hobbies that can be started with minimal effort and expense.
