I designed this Fallen Soldier Cross pattern for a friend who has a laser. That is why the test cut above was done on a laser. The pattern also works fine on the scroll saw so I am going to publish it today.
The purpose of the Fallen Soldier or Battlefield Cross is to show respect for and honor to the dead on the battlefield. It started before the Civil war as a means to identify the dead on the battlefield. In later years it was taken as a symbol of respect to the dead by the soldiers who survived the battle.
The project is four layers. You can use 1/4" thick or 18" thick wood for the layers. The pattern is 10.25" tall.
This video was recently published on YouTube by a gentleman who once published a video magazine several years ago. The magazine no longer exists but he still has the video so he is making them available to us all. His name is Chris DeHut and you can see his YouTube channel at this link.
As you can see in the photo above, Joe produced large scroll saw cuts in slabs. If this is something you are interested then his tips might be valuable to you. It is also just an interesting video to watch.
