When my sister, brother, and myself were small children my dad was a Christmas nut. He loved Christmas and we had to do things a certain way. One of his traditions was to make us all go to bed early on Christmas eve so we could get up early Christmas day and see what Santa had left for us.
I don't think any of us still believed in Santa but my dad sure did. One Christmas we all went to bed early so we could be up bright and early for Santa. We had a sidewalk that ran beside our house next to my bedroom. I woke to a strange noise.
Clipty Klopt, Clipity Klopt was the noise I heard coming down the sidewalk. I still did not know what was going on but I jumped up out of bed to listen. The noise faded then sounded like it was on the front porch. I could also hear my dad fussing. "Down! down!".
I heard the front door open and I could hear my mom yelling at my dad. Now I was just confused but I knew better than to go out of my bedroom before my mom told us it was okay.
Now the noise was thunderous. Clipity Klopy, Clipity Klopt came from the living room and the house shook.
I could not stand waiting and finally, my mom yelled for us to come out. I ran down the hallway to the front room where the Christmas tree was. There was my dad standing in the living room holding the reigns of a huge horse. Scared me half to death.
My dad put a horse under the tree for us kids. My dad liked to do things in a big way. My mom just thought he was crazy.
As it turned out we never got to ride that horse because he was so mean. To this day I don't understand how that horse did not destroy our living room but he behaved while he was in the house.
My dad passed away a couple of years after the horse event. He passed on Christmas eve. Every Christmas eve I have two memories. One memory is sad because my dad passed. The other memory cheers me up because I remember him standing there with the horse in the living room.
