At our new home, we have not had any solicitors. I guess we are a little too far out in the country for it to be worth their while. At our last house, we had quite a few solicitors. I don't miss them at all.
I don't have a problem with salespeople hustling to make a living. More power to them but if there is a sign asking for No Solicitation then that's another story. To be honest I can only think of very few times when I bought from a cold sale. Girl Scout cookies and the occasion school fund drive but that's about all.
My least favorites are the guys who are selling home security systems. I find it strange that they think I would buy something that important from someone off the street. That's like having a dentist come to the door and try to sell a root canal. Ain't gonna happen. :)
There is a pretty good chance that they will not read the sign but at least you will have the nicest no solicitor sign on the street.
