You do not have to use the backer. The backer does add some contrast and color if you use paint or a different species of wood. If you use the backer then 1/4" thick wood may make the ornament too thick at 1/2". I would use 1/8" thick BB plywood. If you don't use the backer then 1/4" will be fine.
