Each year after Christmas I see many new people show up on my blog. Most of them received a scroll saw as a gift and are looking for patterns and information. To those of you who are new, welcome. Here is the link to my free online pattern catalog. That is probably where you want to start.

I know that when you are just getting started with the scroll saw it takes a while to build up the confidence to cut more difficult patterns. This Valentine Teddy Bear is an entry-level pattern. If you want to keep it even simpler you can eliminate the text in the heart.

The Teddy Bear is 7" tall and cut from 1/4" thick Baltic birch plywood. Of course, I painted the heart red to give it some pop.

Let's talk just for a minute about selecting patterns when you are just getting started with the scroll saw. Start out with easy patterns but don't forget to challenge yourself every once in a while. Pick a pattern that you feel might be a little above your current skill level. Often you will find that it is actually less of a challenge than you thought.

When you finish the first few projects you may have a tendency to be too critical of how the projects turned out. Do me and yourself a favor and show the project to someone. The things that you are critical of will probably not even be noticed by the person you show it to. More than likely they will say "How in the world did you do that!"

After you check out the free patterns in the catalog them come back to the blog and look around. I have hundreds of videos that you can watch to get a better understanding of the hobby. We also have a Community Forum where you can ask other people around the world for advice.

If you like what you see then consider subscribing to my newsletter. I post a new pattern several days a week and they are delivered directly to your email inbox. The patterns are free and you can take as many as you like. I do take donations but they are totally optional.

Let me welcome you one more time. This is a great hobby. If you love to make things and be creative you will enjoy the scroll saw. Feel free to email me but let me be honest and upfront. I cannot always answer all of the emails. I will try my best and if I see the same questions over and over I can address it in general on the blog.
