"Bless this Kitchen", trivet. There are two patterns. The large trivet pattern is seven inches. The small trivet pattern is sic inches.
A good finish for a trivet is a 50/50 mix of oil-based poly and mineral spirits. The mineral spirits thin out the poly and allow it to flow into the cutout and grain. The poly gives it at least some protection from the heat. Remember that if you sit something hot enough on wood it will scorch. I don't care what finish you use. It is better for the trivet to scorch than your countertop.
You can use almost any species of wood but some will scorch easier than others. Cherry scorches easily. Red oak would be a good choice as well as walnut.
