This bird art is eight inches tall. There are three 1/4" thick layers.

If you have a difficult time cutting the curves, try this. Cut just outside the line and use a belt or disc sander to sand down to the line.

Quick Scroll Saw Tip:

Large board on the scroll saw

There are two ways to feed the blade through the starter hole in the board. You can feed it from the top down. Called a "Top feeder" or from the bottom up called a "Bottom feeder". It's best to learn to use both techniques.

When the board is large it is difficult to find the hole when you are bottom feeding. Some people prefer to bottom feed all the time so this is a problem. There is a simple trick that makes bottom feeding easier on large boards.

Lay a small mirror in front of the blade. You may also need a small light to the side.

Mark the problem holes with a pencil. The holes closer to the edges are not normally a problem.

Now, when you place the board over the blade you can see the blade and hole in the mirror. It takes some practice but you can learn to thread the blade through the hole without even touching the blade. Just lay the board down where the two meet. This is easier than getting down on the floor and looking up.

In the long run, you will benefit from learning to top feed to solve this problem. Habits can be difficult to change so if bottom feeding is your thing then give this tip a try.
