Gnomes have been protecting gardens for hundreds of years. The Gnomes we know today were popularized in the 19th century by a German sculptor named Philip Griebel. He called them Gartenzwerge(Garden dwarfs). If you want a bit more history of the Garden Gnome then take 4:30 to watch the video below.
I think this Garden Gnome project would be fantastic at protecting your indoor plants. He is a bit over 8" tall and is cut from 1/4" Baltic birch plywood. I cut the butterfly from 1/8" bb ply. If you have solid painting skills he would look fantastic with some color.
One tip. Make sure you add glue at all contact points to increase the strength of the project. The butterfly is positioned there for a reason. He is helping hold the flower in place.
I don't remember who showed me this tip but I use it all the time. Some of the irregular-shaped pieces we cut for scroll saw projects are a bear to clamp as the glue dries. There is one clamp that solves this problem. CA Glue. Okay, it's not a clamp but it plays one on TV.
CA glue sets up in seconds but it can be brittle after it cures and not as permanent as wood glue. Combined they give the advantage of both instant curing and permanent bond.
When I have a part that cannot be clamped I use a couple of spots of CA glue to effectively clamp the pieces together while the wood glue dries.
The advantage of CA glue is that it dries fast. The disadvantage is that it dries fast. You have to get the part in the correct place quickly or it will cure before you have a chance to reposition it.
CA(cyanoacrylate glue) is the proper name for Super Glue or Crazy Glue. It comes in different viscosities. I use the medium most of the time. Titebond is the brand I use but there are a few. I also buy the spray activator. It cures the CA glue almost instantly. I get mine from Bear Woods but they are available all over the place.
CA glue is not inexpensive but you only use a drop or two per joint. CA glue does have a shelf life after the opening of 6 to 12 months. Some of the less expensive brands have a shelf life of as little as a month. Avoid those tiny squeeze tubes available at the grocery checkout line. I have had to throw those out after one use.
