Lumber prices will probably stay high for a while.

Since 2020 lumber prices have been volatile. Rising, then dropping, and once again rising. The experts predict that prices will remain high but volatile throughout the year(2022). You will have to keep your eyes open for good deals and buy when they come available.

Buying boards in the rough can save a few bucks but you need tools to mill those boards to the desired thickness. That means at minimum a planer and decent band saw for resawing and planing to thickness. The higher the price of lumber the quicker that those tools will pay for themselves but it is an upfront expense. You also need the room to run those tools.

If you need to buy scroll saw ready boards then look for deals on Etsy and Ebay. Both of those links are searches for "thin boards". Just watch their number of sales and ratings from buyers. I have purchased many times from both sources and have always been reasonably happy with the product. When you buy thin boards don't expect them all to be flat. They will sometimes warp in shipping.

It is also a good time to be creative. Look for sources of wood in junk stores, scraps from cabinet shops, and local sawmills. Facebook marketplace is another source but not one of my favorites. Keep your eyes open and things will show up.

Even Amazon has sellers with scroll saw ready hardwood boards. Here is a pack of two 1/4" X 6" X 24" boards for $27.45.(Affiliate Link) That's not exactly cheap but it would probably get you through two or three medium-size projects.

On the positive side, now is a good time to be a scroll saw woodworker. The amount of lumber we use per project is tiny compared to furniture makers. Somehow that does not make me feel any better but that's what I keep telling myself.

Keep hunting for deals.
