No Odor Wood Finish
I asked in yesterday's post for recommendations of no odor wood finishes. A reader of the blog had asked me for advice and I knew you guys would have good information. It is obviously a very common issue because my email inbox blew up with suggestions and stories of family members with serious sensitivities to chemical odors.
It will take me a few days to get through all the emails but I am working on a list of the suggestions and will pass them along when I narrow it down a bit.
Many people suggested finishes that had low or no odor after the finish had cured. That is also helpful but does not solve the issue that the reader has. His wife is sickened by the finish as it is applied. The odor moves through the house as it is being sprayed. He does not have a detached workshop.
Several people suggested mineral oil and beeswax. I have tried that and I agree that it has very low odor. It can be a pain for some detailed fretwork to apply but it may be worth the effort if it allows you to not abandon the hobby.
Several have mentioned Shellac as a low or no odor finish. I have no experience with shellac but I have always heard it does have a strong odor while it is being applied.I have never used it so I just don't know.
Another good suggestion was to build a finishing booth. That is probably the best solution but I don't know if they have the room or resources to have that as an option.
The Varathane no odor Polyurethane in the photo above was recommended. I have never used it but it looks like Walmart carries it. I'll try to get ahold of some and test it in my shop. If it is truly no odor that would be an easy solution. The only review I could find for the product was in Wood magazine. They called it low odor.
I will keep going through the email and try to come to some conclusion. I appreciate all the help from everyone.
