Drilling interior holes: Placement and Size.
The size of the drill bit you use to drill interior starter holes depends on the pattern. As a general rule, you should use the largest drill bit that the pattern will allow. The larger the hole the easier it is to feed the blade through the wood. This is especially true for bottom feeders.
In #1 of the example above I am showing the entry hole(Red Dot) drilled close to a turn in the pattern line. I try to always start my cuts on a turning point. This makes it easier to hide the start-stop line and prevent the extra work of sanding that starting point away.
In #2 you see an entry hole on the outside of the pattern lines. You could start this cut from the edge of the board but I usually drill an entry hole here as well. I find it annoying when the cut at the edge of the board separates and gets hung on the edge of the saw table.
