Leaf Box Scroll Saw Pattern.

This leaf box is 1.5" deep. I glued up two 3/4" thick boards to get the depth that I wanted for the box.

When cutting very thick wood remember to limit the side pressure on the blade. You want to keep most of the pressure on the front of the blade. If you don't the blade will bow and the cut will be uneven.

The project is an example of what I mentioned the other day about selecting the blade based on the pattern and not the thickness of the board. I used a relatively small #5 blade to cut the walls. The reason I chose the small #5 blade was that I wanted an accurate cut because I needed the bottom of the box to match the wall so there is not so much sanding to get them even when glued up. A large blade would have made that somewhat more difficult.

The smaller #5 blade made it even more important to not allow side pressure on the blade.

Another tip for cutting thick wood is to apply lots of blade tension. The more tension the less likely the blade will bow. Cut very slow. Do not push the blade faster than it can clear the sawdust.

Wes Balko Makes the first 200 cuts of this multi-hundred cut pattern.

There is a pretty good chance that you won't make it through this full video. It is over 3.5 hours long. I wanted to share it with you all because Wes is a very talented scroller and I wanted you to see what it takes to complete a details project like this Charles Dearing pattern

Wes will be using spiral blades for this cut. This pattern would be almost impossible to cut with flat blades. Spiral blades may be a bit more difficult to control but in this type of pattern, most of the cuts are organic shapes so a little loss of control is not noticeable. The big advantage of spiral blades in this pattern is that you do not need to spin the board. That would get very unwieldy with this size board.

Take a few minutes to check out the video and fast forward if you need to. Drop Wes a comment and hit the thumbs-up button.
