Trivets are easy projects that are also useful. Every kitchen can use at least one trivet and often more than one.

I receive emails asking about using wood for a trivet. They usually want to know how to keep the wood from scorching. If the wood scorches then it did its job. It prevented the hot pan from damaging the surface.

One popular finish for a trivet is a 50/50 mix of oil-based polyurethane and mineral spirits. The thinner finish flows into the grain and hardens giving the trivet better protection from spills and heat. You want to apply 2 or 3 coats wiping off the excess after each coat.

Trivets can be cut from almost any wood. Woods with deep grains like red oak might hold food particles and will need a heavier finish. Although poplar is kind of a bland-looking wood, it is tight-grained and easily available in most big box hardware stores. It is also less expensive than some hardwoods. Cherry makes a beautiful trivet but scorches easily.

The trivets in this pattern are 6.5" in diameter.

Important Safety Video by Jim Hamilton:

Some people may consider this video slightly controversial. I think the message is important enough to share Jim's video. I have watched woodworking YouTube videos for as long as YouTube has been around. I have learned a lot from them but I have also seen terrible safety practices shown.

Some poor practices can be so life-changing that they need to be pointed out. That is what Jim does in this video. Without naming names he shows a woodworker demonstrating a table saw practice that has potential disaster all over it.

My point in sharing this video is to make the point that many of the videos on YouTube show woodworkers who are skilled and thoughtful of safety. There are some who out of ignorance do things that just are not worth the risk. You only get ten finders. They don't grow back.

It is easy to get complacent in the workshop and do something that you have not thought through. Before you make a non-standard cut on a table saw or any other tool, step back and consider the possible problems it may present. Most of the time there is an alternative, more safe way to complete the cut. Wood-holding jigs can be finger-savers.
