This gender announcement stork is just over ten inches tall. He is cut from 1/4" thick wood.

The toddler Tray Pizzle is 10" X 8". These simple tray puzzles are almost always a hit with toddlers.  You can use 1/4" plywood to keep the cost low. If you choose to paint the puzzle use child-safe paint.

Where to find thin boards

One of the most difficult problems new scroller face is where to find thin boards for patterns that call for 1/4" thick boards. If you do not like to purchase online then your choices can be very limited. When you go to the big box hardware stores all you see is 3/4" thick boards for the most part.

Home Depot does sell thin craft boards if you know where to look. They hide the thin stuff on the bottom shelf like in the photo below. Go to the aisle where the boards are and look at the lower shelves.
Their selection is not great but it can get you started. They usually sell poplar and red oak. Most of the thin boards are not that wide. I think 6" is as wide as they get. 6" wide boards can be glued up to make wider boards.

If you are okay with ordering online then https://ocoochhardwoods.com/ has a great selection and fair prices. When you visit their site click the "Project Ready Wood", link. I have no affiliation with Ocooch but I have used them for years and have never been disappointed. I order all of my Baltic birch plywood from them. I go through a lot of this plywood because I use it in my laser.

If you have the option you will get much better wood from Ocooch than you get from Home Depot. Home Depot may eliminate the shopping close so that will probably be less expensive.

Ocooch 1/4" thick Cherry, 8" wide X 24" long is $11 each.
Shipping wood is expensive. If I order just this single board the
shipping to my house is over $11. I never order a single board.
If I order 8 of these boards the shipping is $16.66.

Chicken Basket plus Jesus Key Fob Scroll Saw Pattern

Here is a second pattern for today.

This chicken basket is cut from 1/4" thick wood. It is approximately 9" long, 8" tall, and 6" deep.

The "Lord Jesus", key fob is 2.75" long, 1.25" wide, and 1/4" thick. Here is an Amazon link for the metal split ring. You can also add a bead chain to the key bob if you like that look.

You can also cut the key fob from cast acrylic.

I use a technique that I call sandwich cutting to cut the acrylic on the scroll saw. I sandwich the acrylic between two sheets of Baltic birch plywood. I wrap the sandwich with tape to hold it together. I then apply the pattern on the top of the tape. I use a #3 blade. The smaller blade seems to give me a smoother cut.

Optional Paint

All graphics in this post are 3D renderings.

My new choice for spray adhesive.

For years I had used 3M 45 spray adhesive. It was the least expensive pray adhesive I could find that worked well to glue down patterns. Sometime during the pandemic, 3M stopped selling the product so I started looking for an alternative.

Some brands that I tested worked well but were terribly expensive so I kept looking. I finally settled on Loctite General Performance 100 Adhesive Spray I found it at Menards for $5.50. You can also get it on Amazon for just over $8

It is very close in usability to the 3M 45. It is just slightly less sticky but I have not experienced any lifting of the pattern while cutting.

I am good with the price and the usability is acceptable so this is my current choice.

Before you start sending me an email about all the other options to attach a pattern to the wood let me say this. I have used every method and for me personally, spray adhesive is my favorite option. If you prefer other options I have no problem with any of them. Well, maybe I do have a problem with carbon paper.😁
