The number of U.S. residents who sail has been roughly flat for a decade, with about 3.5 million to 4 million people going at least once per year and 1.2 million sailing at least seven times per year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and research by industry groups.

Greece holds the distinction of having the most people who sail. They have the advantage of very good weather for sailing. It is warm and sunny most of the year. They don't have much rain and they are sheltered from large tides.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnson was the first person to sail solo around the world non-stop. If you enjoy documentaries about adventure then you may enjoy the full-length video below. It documents his journey starting in 1968. In those days they did not have GPS or other communication and navigation electronics available. He used a sextant for navigation. Weather and currents were difficult to predict so the voyage was long, dangerous, and lonely.
